(source)–A 22-year-old has been arrested in an alleged scam of the largest internet retailer that totaled nearly $370,000 by sending return packages filled with dirt.

James Gilbert Kwarteng, of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, allegedly swindled AmazonOpens a New Window. by filling up the ordered items’ boxes with dirt and registering with the exact weight of the product. He would then receive a refund from Amazon and sell the original item, according to El EspañolOpens a New Window. and El Diario de MallorcaOpens a New Window.

The return packages would end up sitting around in Amazon’s warehouses where they aren’t checked often. The scam wasn’t discovered until through a random search where someone opened a box and discovered it was full of dirt.

Amazon’s return policy states items shipped from the website, including Amazon Warehouse, can be returned within 30 days of receipt. Refunds are processed in two business days and customers can expect their funds show in their account in three to five business days.
The report states the success of the alleged scam by Kwarteng, who has been released on bail, enabled him to create his own company.
I love this kid. LOVE. Score one for the little guy. Well kinda. He got busted and he’s probably going to jail for a while, but I bet while he was doing this scam he was absolutely on top of the world. He was living a combination of “Office Space” and “Indiana Jones” and “Catch Me If You Can”. Just sitting there every day, stealing what amounts to a drop in the ocean for Amazon with nothing but a scale and a dream
It was the perfect crime until…a random search and now Bezos’s big bald head is rolling down on him with justice
Personally…I think he should walk free of charge. Amazon steals data from us every god damn day. They basically force me to buy their shit with push notifications, targeted ads, and emails. And they get away with it because they throw some small print terms and conditions bullshit. This kid scored one for us. The little guys. He should’ve just had his own terms and conditions page that said “I can return the product or it’s equivalent weight in dirt for full price in exchance for the data you take from me” because the people at Amazon are humans too and nobody is going to read that shit. I feel like that should be legal. Either way, I would watch a documentary about this kid. I want to know what the Business he started with the $370k he took from Bezos because I want to invest as soon as he gets out of jail.
