The Crease Dive's Premier Lacrosse League Week 7 Preview Featuring Jerry Ragonese

Jerry-TCD

Bye week is over. All Star week is over. We’re finally back to the PLL regular season after a few weeks off and the boys are heading to Denver this weekend. To get us ready for week 7 in the PLL, we brought on the newest member of the Redwoods this week, Jerry Ragonese. Jerry was just traded from the Archers to the Redwoods at the deadline for Joey Sankey and a 4th round pick. So we did a little bit of talking about the trade and about how he’ll fit in with the Redwoods. But mostly we talked about how Jerry absolutely crushes it in the kitchen and has been putting on a ramen clinic recently.

Get you a faceoff specialist who can cater team dinners.

We also get into why being bald is actually an advantage in lacrosse, why the New Jersey Devils will never win another Stanley Cup, and why everybody just needs to politely shut the frickin’ heck up about faceoffs in lacrosse.

PLL Week 7 Preview // Denver // Dick’s Sporting Goods Park

All of the games this weekend are rematches from week 1 in Boston. June 1 seems like it was forever ago at this point, but even though a ton has changed between then and now, I feel like we’ll see a pretty similar weekend here in Denver. The total goal differential in the three games during week 1 was just 4 goals. Two of the games went to overtime and the other game was an 11-9 finish. So just as is the case with every PLL weekend, I’d expect all of these games to come down to the final minutes. Not much of a hot take, I know, but that’s just how this league is.

Atlas (2-4) vs Redwoods (4-2) // Saturday, 5pm ET

Week 1 Score: Redwoods 11 – Atlas 9

The Redwoods are riding a nice little 3-game win streak, which means that Jules Heninburg is still the only undefeated man left in the PLL. 3 straight wins from the Woods and they’ve been rolling at every area on the field. Tim Troutner has become one of the best goalies in professional lacrosse. Their defensive unit continues to bully the shit out of every offense they play against. Their midfielders can bring the bombs. And then the attack unit since Heningburg and Ryder Garnsey got into the lineup have been clowning defenses on a weekly basis.

The Atlai are still…well I still don’t really know how to feel about them. And I think the biggest issue is that we don’t really know whomst mans is the Atlas. By default I’d say that it’s Rabil’s team but with how much Paul does when it comes to running the league and staying in game-shape at 30+ years old, do you really want to put all the responsibility on Rabil to be “the guy”? Maybe not so much. Seems like he has a lot of other stuff on his plate and maybe somebody else could step in that role. Until then I just think that a team as deep as the Redwoods will be able to control the game for the most part. So I’ll go with the Woods again this go around.

Chaos (4-2) vs Whipsnakes (5-1) // Saturday, 8pm ET

Week 1 Score: Whipsnakes 15 – Chaos 14 (OT)

The Whipsnakes and Chaos are probably the two most entertaining teams to watch right now in regards to offenses that make you go “how the fuck did that just happen” on a regular basis. The only issue heading into this weekend is that as of right now, Miles Thompson isn’t in the lineup for the Chaos with an injury. The Whipsnakes just score and score and score some more, so if you’re going to beat them you need to keep pace offensively. Life is still good for the Chaos since they have the bomb squad who can fire away from 2, and then they also have Connor Fields who leads the league in goals. But even with the All Star break stopping the momentum a little, I feel like you need as full a squad as possible to beat the Whipsnakes right now. So I’ll go with the Whips again in overtime.

Chrome (1-5) vs Archers (2-4) // Sunday, 4pm ET

Week 1 Score: Archers 13 – Chrome 12 (OT)

The Chrome started off the season 0-5 before absolutely shit pumping the Chaos in week 6. The Archers started off the season 2-0 and looked like they were going to be running shit all season long with how well their offense was clicking. But since then, they’ve dropped 4 straight games. So the Chrome have the longest losing streak in league history so far with 5 in a row, but the Archers currently have the longest active losing streak with 4 in a row. Which essentially makes this game the Flint Michigan Megabowl.

Personally, I’d love to see the Chrome start to rattle off a few wins now and get themselves into the winners bracket of the playoffs to close out the regular season. We should always be rooting for mass chaos (little ‘c’ chaos, not the team). So if we’re going for what brings the most drama to the league, I’d say that a team that started off 0-5 going all the way to the final would be the #1 option on that list. No offense to the Archers or anything but a 2-4 team just doesn’t do anything for me. There’s no interesting angle to work with there. So my heart says Chrome, my brain says overtime and maybe we’ll finally see our first tie in league history.

Now go out there and have yourselves a weekend, folks. I love you all. Even the haters.
