The NBA 2K20 Ratings Are Out And Frankly They're A Disaster

Ahhhhh yes, the annual 2K ratings release. If there’s one thing we know, it’s that professional athletes care wayyy too much about what their ratings end up being when it comes to that sport’s video game. Whether it’s Madden or 2K, this matters to players and don’t let them tell you otherwise. So last night when 2K started to release some of their rankings, obviously there was room for some debate. Now as someone extremely cheap and extremely jewish, these ratings make no difference to me because I’m currently in Year 5 of my 2K18 MyGM mode and have no plans of stopping just because there’s a new version of the game out. To this day that is the one thing that drives me insane. Just let me transfer my franchise from year to year of the game. I’ll buy it every goddamn year if that were the case, but if you think I’m going to just give up on the chemistry and the titles that I have accumulated over this 5 year stretch you are out of your mind.

But that’s a different tangent for a different day. Let’s have a look at the ratings of the top 20 players for next year. Honestly, no real problem with the top 5. LeBron is the highest ranked player once again which isn’t a shock but is also 100% bullshit. There is no way LeBron is the best player in the NBA right now, I’m sorry that’s not me being a hater, that’s just the truth. Given what we just watched Kawhi do I’m OK with him being slightly higher than Giannis. Pretty insane that Giannis can be so high while still be an iffy shooter, but that just goes to show you how dominant he is. Having said that there is no way he should be the same rating as Kevin Durant. Durant is a much more lethal offensive player, and honestly just as good defensively when healthy so his number feels way too low. In the next grouping, if we’re being completely honest I feel like Embiid has to be higher than a 91. Remember this is video games so health isn’t really a factor. He’s basically just as dominant offensively as Davis just in his own way, and defensively he’s proven to be solid. Maybe a 93 or 94 for him feels more accurate. The big surprises for me came in the next grouping. Having Jokic at just a 90 is stupid, that should be at least 1 or 2 points higher and there is no way Kyrie should be ranked higher than him. KAT not being at least a 90 or 91 is wild. The man is a walking like 25/13 and while his defense is dogshit he’s still one of the best young bigs in the entire league. I’m not saying go crazy and give him a 99 like the Timberwolves suggested

but 89 feels low. The final group of players is pretty accurate in my opinion because these are the sort of next tier down star guys, your 3rd team All NBA or All Star but no All NBA caliber talent. There were some additional players released that fell outside the top 20 that I’m sure people won’t be upset about

Sixers fans 1000% feel like Simmons should at least be a 90. You know it and I know it. However I’m actually surprised he was this high considering his shooting outside of 5ft must be like a 42. Also I wonder how much Donovan Mitchell’s 32% three point shooting played a role in his ranking, because 88 is still pretty high for a guy that wasn’t all that efficient. We also got the ratings of a couple rookies as well

Which seems about right. Maybe a little low for Morant, maybe you give him an 80 or something but I wouldn’t say they got robbed or anything like that. They also gave us De’Andre Hunter at 77 and Darius Garland at 77. The best part of this release was we can finally answer the hottest question of the summer. Who has the best dynamic duo?

This feels right, only I don’t think 2K is factoring in a scenario where the Nets have to play the Bucks in the second round of the playoffs. If that happens their duo’s rating is going to tank. Trust me.

I know this is silly and something you shouldn’t care about, but I will always love when video game rankings come out. It’s mid July, Summer League is over, we need shit to argue on the internet about and nothing does the trick better than 2K/Madden rankings. I look forward to everyone talking about how a guy of their favorite team is way too low, someone on a team they hate is way too high, and NBA players everywhere getting mad online about it.
