End Your Week With A Reminder That Mario's Last Name Is... Mario

That’s right. Their names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. It’s just one of the many absurd things to come out of the horrendously bad 1993 ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie.

Game Informer: Some people claim that Mario and Luigi’s last name is “Mario.” Are their names officially Mario Mario and Luigi Mario?

Shigeru Miyamoto: This is an old story, but Hollywood did a film version of the Mario Bros. many years back. There was a scene in the script where they needed a last name for the characters. Somebody suggested that, because they were the Mario Bros., their last name should be Mario. So, they made him “Mario Mario.” I heard this and laughed rather loudly. Of course, this was ultimately included in the film. Based on the film, that’s [how] their names ended up. But, just like Mickey Mouse doesn’t really have a last name, Mario is really just Mario and Luigi is really just Luigi.

The movie is complete trash but also fascinating.

The characters of Mario (rest in peace, Bob Hoskins) and Luigi don’t look all that bad, but they butchered so many classic characters. For example, let’s look at Dennis Hopper as King Koopa/Bowser (the character is confusing in terms of Nintendo “canon”)…

Classic Lizard Man, everyone’s favorite Mario character. How about the well known pesky Goombas…

What in the fuck is this?

You could easily say this is one of the dumbest looking characters in movie history. I’m okay with movie adaptions that don’t stay completely true to their source material… unless they’re tiny head, trench coat wearing giants. They were also featured in one of the movie’s best scenes…

Lastly, we get to Yoshi, who was revealed during the Jurassic Park era of dinosaurs in the United States and the world…

Not terrible, but still a bit ridiculous. I guess Yoshi is a dinosaur? I never really thought of that back in the day of the NES, SNES and Nintendo 64, but I am okay with letting it slide.

Overall, this movie is worth a watch if you have some time for a “so bad it’s good” movie. They had tons of script issues, actors were drunk on set and the studio had no idea what it wanted with the movie. JoBlo Videos did a good breakdown of everything that went wrong with the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie…

Anyway, have a great weekend. Tell some people Mario’s last name is Mario and get a good laugh (if you don’t, don’t blame me).
