20 Years Ago Today, The Second Most Popular Song Of ALL TIME Was Released
The most successful song of all time, per Billboard, is “The Twist” by Chubby Checker. Which is fair, I’ve never come across anyone who dislikes “The Twist.” It’s a good time had by all. But it’s nothing like the sultry little sweat that dropped at the beginning of Summer ’99. With Y2K looming on the horizon, Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas knew they had to drop a smash before planes fell out of the sky and our refrigerators ate us whole. And boy oh boy did they deliver and then some.
For those questioning the validity of “the second most popular/successful song of all time” title I keep throwing around, this is straight from SMOOTH’s Wikipedia page.
“Smooth” is a collaboration between Latin rock band Santana and Matchbox Twenty vocalist Rob Thomas. The song was written by Itaal Shur and Thomas, produced by Matt Serletic and sung by Thomas. It won three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Not only was it the final number-one Hot 100 hit of the 1990s, but it was also the first number-one Hot 100 hit of the 2000s. “Smooth” is the only song to appear on two decade-end Billboard charts. As of 2018, “Smooth” is ranked the second most successful song of all time by Billboard.

The only number one hit in to separate centuries, millennia, decades, you name it – SMOOTH has done it. I didn’t care for that brief time in the internet’s history where people were seemingly making fun of this song? Maybe I missed something but if you think SMOOTH is anything less than hotter than the fucking midday Sun you shouldn’t have access to basic human rights. Voting? No chance. Electricity? Buddy, not today, not ever. The ability to speak out loud without being promptly struck down by the nearest human? LMAO, you wish.

SMOOTH is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Put it on at any time in any place and everyone becomes instantly happier. If there’s another goal when it comes to making a slapper then I don’t know it. One of the most skilled guitarists of all time along side a premier voice of the ’90s.
