Judge Sentences Man To 3 Days in Jail.....Valentines Day in 2020, 2021, and 2022
A New Jersey doctor who pummeled a 12-year-old boy in a “ski rage” attack three years ago will spend the next three Valentine’s Days behind bars — with a judge specifically choosing that date because it’s when the beatdown took place.
Dr. Samuel Caruthers, 47, of Mountain Lakes, is slated to spend 24 straight hours in the Sussex County jail on Feb. 14, 2020 and then again in 2021 and 2022 after being sentenced Wednesday.
The judge in his case apparently wanted to send a message to Caruthers, who attacked the young victim with a ski pole while he was snowboarding at the Mountain Creek resort in Vernon. The doctor was reportedly set off by the boy after he crashed into his 10-year-old son on a bunny slope.
Well I would’ve put a lot of money that this type of bizarre sentence wasn’t for a ski rage incident. I figured it was maybe a domestic case, but only 3 days in jail means it couldn’t have been that serious? Maybe someone got stood up on Valentines Day, or stuck their date with a huge bill and left. I don’t know. But I definitely didn’t think it’d be a little dust up at a bunny slope.
So I guess I’ll address that part of the story first. Apparently this 12-year-old crashed into a 10 year-old-pretty hard on a bunny slope at a ski resort, and the dad’s response was to attack the kid with a ski pole. I know parents get extra juiced up when their kid is involved, but I could think of a couple better responses to the situation for the adult than to beat a 6th grader up. But his defense lawyer disagreed. This wasn’t a crime. If anything, it was a crime of passion. A crime of loving too much.

I love that. I want to be a lawyer and just make crazy jumps like that. But as much as I want to be a lawyer, this makes me think that Dave Portnoy needs to be a lawyer. The king of spin zones. Could you imagine Dave and a prosecutor going at it in a courtroom? Semantics, semantics, semantics. I’ve never heard him lose an argument on radio. If Barstool doesn’t end up working out for him, I think he could have a promising career in the judicial system.
Anyways, the main point of the story is how ridiculous of a sentence this guy got. 3 days in jail…..spread out over the next 3 years. He’s going to have that hanging over his head still in 2022! I feel like this might hit the “unusual” part of cruel and unusual punishment. I don’t know how the legal system works because I abide by the rules and regulations established in this great country, but I’m assuming he can appeal this? With that doctor money, he probably won’t serve a day.
To me, the real culprit here is the judge. This would be a great headline making decision had it been a response to a crime involving a date gone comically wrong, but this appears to be a real crime and a really stupid ruling. The judge is just out there looking for attention. And you guys know me, I hate when people do things for attention. I just keep to myself out here and in middle of bum frick Ohio.
