College Football Is Getting A Bowl Game In Boston That Absolutely Nobody Asked For

Nobody:

NCAA: Let’s add a lower-tier bowl game in Boston outside in December!

Yep, there will be three more bowl games added to the college post season in 2020 –  which totals to a whopping 43 games – including one at Fenway Park. (Via Stadium)

I can’t wait to see the amount of people in the New England – who don’t give a flying fuck about college football – that don’t show up to Fenway in the middle of December to watch two garbage ACC and AAC teams play a game that couldn’t matter less.

Notre Dame/BC has actually pulls a decent crowd when they play at God’s ballpark, but that’s because Boston loves the Irish. The only saving grace for this no-name bowl is that it could become a popular destination for BC. But it’ll most likely be the bottom of the barrel 5-7 ACC team and some AAC team nobody in the Northeast has heard of.

You think people are showing up for ECU vs NC State? Not a chance.

(Side note: When are we going to stop pretending that a football field fits nicely inside Fenway???)

Look, I love college football just as much as anybody. I also love Boston (find a new slant). I love going to Fenway. And yes, there are already games played at Yankee Stadium and Chase Field in Arizona so we know it’s possible. But this move makes no sense to me.

As McMurphy pointed out, this means 65% of teams will make a bowl game in 2020. SIXTY FIVE PERCENT. That’s absurd. It’s over-saturation at it’s finest. We’re getting to the point where we could see a good amount of sub .500 teams going bowling. It used to be a reward for winning half your games. Not anymore, folks. Bowl games are quickly becoming a participation trophy and I hate it.

You know how many bowl games actually matter? Like seven games total. But sure, let’s add a few more. Why not.

As somebody who covered a good amount of bowl games in my days with the self proclaimed world wide leader, I can tell you first hand a lot of ‘who-gives-a-shit bowl’ games are miserable. There may be 200 people in the crowd. It’s pathetic.

But, per usual, it’s all about that cash money. The amount of advertising that the title sponsors get for even the worst of bowl games is insane.

And stop me if you’ve heard this before: The NCAA, the TV networks and conferences are going to tote those student-athetes out there as much as possible – even if it’s to an empty stadium – as long as it makes them money. Regardless, the attendance for the lower-level bowl games is down right embarrassing. I guess the one plus of playing a game at Fenway is that it only holds 37,000 people. It won’t look AS bad. But I digress…

STOP ADDING BOWL GAMES NOBODY GIVES A FUCK ABOUT AND JUST EXPAND THE PLAYOFFS.

PS – Please disregard all of this blog if we can some how make this the Barstool Sports Bowl at Fenway Park. If we’re going to get a bowl, Boston is where it’s happening. We’d add a stop on the CFB tour right around the holidays. Big Cat sing the National Anthem. Dave can be the commissioner. Tommy can be the mascot. Big Ev can shot gun a beer at the coin toss. Why not.

Plus, can you imagine if ESPN had to run our branding all bowl season long??
