Can Dan Gilbert Finally Get Tom Izzo to Come Coach The Cavs?

My good friend Dan Gilbert bought this team in 2005, and for the 6th time since then, we are looking for a new head coach. I, for one, thought Larry Drew did a pretty good job. Certainly better than the last two head coaches we had (Ty Lue and LeBron James). But I get why the Cavs want to move forward without him. They have a talented young player in Colin Sexton, and they’re hoping to bring home Zion Williamson, Ja Morant, or RJ Barrett in a couple months. This team doesn’t need an aged veteran coach. It needs someone to develop their talent. It needs someone that Dan Gilbert, Michigan State Class of ’83, KNOWS he can trust to do a good job. Yep, that’s right folks: for the 6th time in a row, the Cavs #1 option has to be none other than Tom Izzo.

Bring him home, Danny. We believe in you. You’re a good man, and you’re a good friend to Tom. He owes you one this time around.

Unfortunately, Tom Izzo has turned down the Cavs in each of their last 5 openings. And this time around doesn’t appear to be the most appealing of situations. Izzo is 64 years old, is coming off another Final 4 appearance in which he beat Duke, and has most of that team returning to pair with a good incoming recruiting class. Tom Izzo isn’t going anywhere but to Mercedes Benz Stadium next March.

So yeah, the answer is going to be a hard no. Tom Izzo is not interested in the Cavs job. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to try our hand at hiring a top college guy.

Oooh, Woj Bomb! The Cavs are going to be looking at college coaches or experienced NBA assistants to fill their vacancy. But those names he listed are BORING. Folks we’re going to have Colin Sexton and potentially the biggest name in basketball, ZION. Let’s make a little bigger splash than……Utah’s Alex Jensen. I like the list that the Cleveland Plain Dealer suggested a whole lot better.

Now that’s what I’m talking about! Hey Tony Bennett, you want to prove you’re a good coach? Try winning a championship in the big leagues. Everyone is saying that you and your team lucked out in each of your last three tournament games. It’s time for you to prove the doubters wrong. And I wouldn’t mind Shaka Smart either. The dude has swag, and he should definitely consider the jump if we want him, seeing as his 71-66 record at Texas might have him on the hot seat there already. And speaking of hot seats, Bill Self I see you on this list, too! I know they probably want to keep you down at Kansas, I just don’t know if the FBI will allow it!

Come to Cleveland, Bill. The NCAA won’t care about you paying your players up here.
