What Happened Last Night In Boxing? (NSFW)

Morning, all.

UWkd6Ix

For anyone just waking up and wondering what the results were from last night’s pay-per-view event:

Errol Spence Jr. (c) def. Mikey Garcia via unanimous decision (120-107, 120-108, 120-108)
David Benavidez def. J’Leon Love via second-round TKO
Luis Nery def. McJoe Arroyo via fourth-round TKO (corner stoppage)
Chris Arreola def. Jean Pierre Augustin via third-round TKO

For anyone who wants to know specifically how Mikey did in the first loss of his career, the answer is- Not well.  Spence won every round in the most lopsided fight I have ever seen between 2 fighters consider to be in the mix for best pound-for-pound boxers alive.

I said it in my preview that Garcia shouldn’t have taken this fight, and maybe there is a moral victory to going the distance, but he is heading back down to lightweight with nothing to show for it but an “L”.

There was a sentiment that Mikey had “nothing to lose” taking a challenging fight like this at a higher weight, but I think at the very least he should lose the ability to chose his opponents going forward.  The Garcia camp was strongly against taking this bout and the whitewash on the scorecards coupled with Compu-Box numbers that are almost painful to read proves his camp was absolutely right.

Hopefully Lomachenko watched this fight and gets a reminder that weight classes are there for a reason, especially between 130 and 150, where height and weight-driven-punching-power really come into play.

Similarly, Spence only proved to us last night that he could beat up a smaller boxer, but NOT knock him out, so I don’t know if he walked out of the stadium with much more than a fat check.

And if Errol thinks fans want his next fight to be against a 40-year-old Manny Pacquiao, he is dead wrong.

People ask me all the time on the day of the fight if it will be worth the $75 pay-per-view price tag… Last night’s event was not.  Dominant performances up and down the undercard (Benavidez is awesome) led to earlier-than-expected stoppages and an annoying lag before the main event.  And then the main event itself was extremely predictable and one-sided.

The good news is we have a lot of star power on the docket going forward highlighted with Loma fighting in a couple of weeks, followed by Crawford vs Khan on April 20th (I’ll be there), Canelo vs Jacobs on May 4th, and Joshua vs Big Baby on June 1st.

Happy Paddy’s Day, everyone.
