Around this time last year, we learned that Butch Jones found a new job at Nick Saban’s School For Coaches Who Don’t Coach Good:

Along the way, Intern Butch washed some cars:

Smoked some cigars:

And got a Gatorade bath:

Thanks to almost every Alabama assistant leaving this offseason, the thought was that Butch would drop the intern tag and become a full-time coach. That isn’t the case:

SOURCE-Butch Jones will continue to be an anchor on Tennessee’s ledger throughout 2019.

Alabama announced positions for Nick Saban’s coaching staff on Friday, and the roll call confirmed what had been suspected for a while: Jones did not get promoted to an on-field position. He remains an analyst. The difference in salary between the positions is hundreds of thousands of dollars that could have helped mitigate the buyout Tennessee owes Jones.

Jones made $35,000 as an analyst last season.

The reason for staying an intern? To keeeeeppppp cashing them checks, baby:

Tennessee fired Jones in November 2017 amid his fifth season as coach. UT owed Jones an $8.26 million buyout due in monthly installments through the end of his contract, which expires Feb. 28, 2021.

Jones collected $2.81 million in buyout payments through the end of 2018, according to records obtained by The News Sentinel via a public records request. He’s due more than $2.4 million in buyout payments throughout 2019, according to the terms of his contract and taking his analyst salary into account.

Can’t spell buy out without UT, baby.

I’m happy to have Butch in my fraternity of longtime interns. It’s an honor.
