Chicago Needs It's Own Version Of The Beanpot
One more reason to be jealous of Boston…they have one of the sweetest tournaments in the country. The Annual Beanpot Tournament between the four major hockey programs in the city. Boston University, Boston College, Harvard, and Northeastern play for a trophy, but mostly just for bragging rights. I don’t think it counts towards conference games or anything. It’s essentially a HYPER competitive tournament in the middle of the season. It’s sweet and I’m EXTREMELY jealous of it. Everyone hates Harvard because fuck them, BC-BU have a natural rivalry because they’re both National powers, and then everyone shits on Northeastern as a safety school. I wish Chicago had it’s own version of the Beanpot. The only problem is that Chicago has exactly zero Division 1 hockey programs(RIP UIC Flames, dropped the program in 1996).
Chicago needs to do this tournament in College Basketball. Loyola, Depaul, UIC, and Northwestern need to get together to make this an annual February tournament. It’d be incredible. Pause your respective conference slates for one weekend and get these four teams in a rotating arena for City bragging rights. It feels like a no-brainer.

Kids in Boston grow up thinking about playing in the Beanpot. It’s a tool for recruiting against other East Coast teams. Chicago could do the same thing. Some 4 star kid from Whitney Young or Simeon might elect to one day sign with DePaul instead of like Butler or Marquette because the City Championship is that prestigious. In order to have real prestige, you need a name with Cache and a sweet looking trophy. Well…introducing “The Beef Plate”

Four teams, one weekend. Imagine Sister Jean taking a huge bite of a delicious italian beef victory sandwhich. It’d go viral. Someone who would know told us that one of the reasons why this hasn’t happened is because Loyola and Depaul hate each other…uhhh hey idiots…go public with that hatred. Hatred sells. I love hate. Loyola should be dragging their nuts over every Chicago school because they made a Final Four run. DePaul can counter by perpetuating the fake news that Sister Jean stands with the Catholic students in Kentucky. Stir the pot…
