The Eagles Should Get Rings If The Patriots Win The Super Bowl Using This Underdog Mentality
On multiple occasions throughout the season, the mainstream media attempted to say something along the lines of the Patriots’ dynasty being over or Tom Brady is done or something like that.
Then Tom Brady and the New England Patriots decided to use those words of doubt as motivation, thus taking on the “underdog” role in these playoffs.
Then the mainstream media started to get annoyed at 5x Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady and the New England Patriots trying to play the underdog role, even though it was their own words they were using as motivation.
Then Pres and the rest of the Boston crew here at Barstool got annoyed with the mainstream media being annoyed that the Patriots were playing the underdog role after the Patriots were annoyed by the mainstream media counting them out multiple times throughout the season. It’s such a goddamn annoying side story to this Super Bowl and I can’t wait for Sunday to be over so that we can be done with the whole damn ordeal.
HOWEVA….
The one question that really needs to be asked about this whole “Are the Patriots allowed to consider themselves underdogs?” story is whether or not the Philadelphia Eagles deserve to get Super Bowl LIII rings if the Pats win on Sunday night after using their exact game plan from last year. I mean let’s be real with ourselves here. The Patriots saw first hand last year how dangerous that mentality can make a team. The NFL is a copycat league and in order to win the Super Bowl this year, the Patriots are looking to do exactly what resulted in them losing it last year.
Now I’m not so naive as to think the Philadelphia Eagles invented the “us against the world” “nobody outside of this locker room believes in us” type of mentality. The underdog role had been around since sports were first invented. But the Eagles just really scaled it up and they truly were Underdogs. They were down to a backup quarterback going up against quite possibly the greatest dynasty in NFL history. The Patriots, on the other hand, are not true underdogs.
Sure, maybe people counted them out. Maybe people said their time was over. But being doubted isn’t the same thing as being the underdog. All you have to do is look at Vegas and see the Pats being 2.5 point favorites to know that they’re not actually underdogs. But that doesn’t change the fact that they’re going to convince themselves that they’re the underdogs here this week. And why would they do that? Because it’s what the Eagles did last year and they’re looking to replicate that success. The Patriots are putting out a new song but they’re sampling the Eagles in the beat. All I’m saying is that the Eagles deserve a little recognition for their contributions to New England’s success this year. That’s all.
