Why Don't We Talk About The Warriors Greatness The Same Way We Do The Patriots?
I tweeted this out the other day and since then have gotten into a back and forth with some people about it. One of the biggest complaints from people is the NBA sucks because the Warriors are going to be in the Finals and are favorites every year.
My counterargument is why don’t we say that about the NFL with the Patriots? We praise the Patriots for being the best dynasty in the NFL and the best organization and all that jazz. Well, shouldn’t we be doing the same for the Warriors?
In my world, yes, we should. But, first let’s get into the two main reasons as to why that will never happen.
First was the reason I gave and one that many said. People look at the Warriors as a SuperTeam. The fact is, yes, they signed Kevin Durant, but they drafted their core. Curry, Draymond and Klay were all Warriors from the get go. I know it’s not the same situation, but we never cared when the Pats signed Randy Moss.
Then they went ahead and signed Boogie Cousins for a year. But, that’s besides the point. It’s the fact that Kevin Durant left the Thunder after losing in 7 games to join a team that won 73 games. It’s the one that will always prevent people from correctly talking about the dominance of the Warriors like we do the Patriots.
To me, it says a bit about their front office and ability to navigate the salary cap that should be rewarded. As I mentioned they were able to draft 3 stars including one of the guys who completely changed the way the game is played in Steph Curry. The dude is a legit alien when it comes to the court. The Patriots don’t get knocked for the way Brady’s contract is written to help the team, the same should be rewarded for the Warriors.
The second one I heard quite a bit about is anything can happen in a one game event like the NFL Playoffs vs a series like the NBA. Sure, that makes sense. But, why don’t we like that better teams are rewarded? I hear about this during the NCAA Tournament too.
‘Chalk is boring.’
It’s what we want though. There’s a reason the NCAA Tournament draws better when it’s the blue bloods and No. 1/2 seeds playing in the Elite Eight/Final Four. No matter what the minority says, the majority wants to the see the best players/teams playing. That’s been the Warriors.
As for ‘there’s a chance the Pats could lose.’ The Warriors were a quarter away from being eliminated by the Rockets. They were a JR Smith forgetting the score away from possibly a wild series. Kevin Durant has hit 2 massive threes with under a minute to go to win another game in the last 2 series. So, yes, the Warriors ‘can lose.’ But, it’s a best of 7 for a reason. It’s to reward the better teams.
Yes, I hate the way Durant left the Thunder. Yes, there are benefits to being the Warriors. But, we should be talking about them the same way we talk about the Patriots.
That is the best organization in their respective leagues. When all the think pieces come out about how the Patriots are dominant, we should say the same for the Warriors instead of saying they ruined the NBA. The Patriots didn’t ruin the NFL.
