Woody Johnson Wants To Trade Revis

CBS Sports – The New York Jets, fresh off an exhaustive hunt for new general manager John Idzik, will explore options to deal star corner Darrelle Revis this offseason, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Revis, whose contract voids after the 2014 season, is set to earn $6 million in 2013 (between salary and bonuses), and owner Woody Johnson has strong reservations about the ability to extend Revis’s deal, the sources said. Johnson has expressed his desire to attempt to land value for Revis now, rather than risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent a year from now, most likely seeking as much draft-pick compensation for him as possible. The Jets are very much in transition mode, they have cap issues moving forward and are trying to embark on a rebuilding process after firing former long-time general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Revis, who missed almost all of last season after suffering a torn ACL, engaged in a long holdout in 2010 that resulted in a contract extension that was more of a Band-Aid than anything else. Revis signed a seven-year deal then that voids to a four-year pact, thus making him an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season. The deal also precludes him being hit with the franchise tag or any other such mechanism. Johnson has made it very clear he would like to pursue a means to reap rewards for Revis now, sources said, and it is likely to be an immediate part of Idzik’s initial job duties.

Darrelle Revis is the only shred of real talent left on the Jets. The only value they’ve got. So while I’d hate to see him go, and as much as you hate to trade a guy who’s value is low due to injury, this makes sense. As bizarre as it feels to say, this decision by the Jets makes sense. Its a lot like the Mets trading RA Dickey or any other team that has been in rebuilding mode that has a seriously valuable chip. The Jets window is shut – completely shut. If they were in the market for a quarterback and had some young studs coming into their prime next year, I’d keep Revis and hope for a bounce back, shut down year and hope they could turn it all around like this year’s Vikings did. But none of that is happening. The Jets are going to be the exact same failure of a team next year and then Revis hits the market, where he’ll command money the Jets clearly won’t give him. Yes, trading him fresh of his ACL injury probably hurts his value – but ACL injuries just aren’t the death knell they used to be, and there’s a plethora of conditional picks and packages you can create for a player who’s performance is uncertain. Still gonna be worth a boatload of picks to someone who wants one of the best defensive players in the game.

PS – Woody Johnson needs to get the fuck out of the Jets operations. You hear his name so fucking much these days its nauseating. Woody didn’t want Tebow, Woody wants to trade Revis. It hurts everyone’s value every time he opens his mouth. Sit down and be quiet like all the successful owners in the league. Anytime your owner is in the papers or making the decisions you’re fucked. Hire guys you trust to take care of that and shut the fuck up.
