Dude Steals $96,000 From Manhattan Restaurant, Spends $52,000 On Internet Porn

WSJ – A bookkeeper for one of Manhattan’s most expensive restaurants was charged with stealing nearly $100,000, and authorities said he spent half the money on Internet pornography. Rafael Thomas, 41 years old, pleaded not guilty to grand larceny and falsifying business reports in Manhattan Supreme Court in connection with the alleged thefts from Masa, a Time Warner Center sushi restaurant that features a prix fixe dinner for $450 per person—before drinks, tip and taxes. Prosecutor Jose Fanjul said Mr. Thomas started working as a bookkeeper at the Columbus Circle restaurant in January 2011 and “appeared to be the model employee” during his first four months there. The alleged theft—which totaled about $96,000 between January 2011 and February 2012—was discovered when a manager going over the restaurant’s financial records noticed several pages were missing, including those that included Mr. Thomas’s payroll records, Mr. Fanjul said. The prosecutor said a review of Mr. Thomas’s credit- and debit-card transactions showed that he spent about $52,000 on Internet adult entertainment sites in a one-year period.

How can one man be smart enough to skim 100 grand from a bougie restaurant, yet stupid enough to spend 50 of it on internet porn? I mean I know the whole “Who pays for internet porn?” angle is nothing new. But I mean, fuck, how much internet porn is out there to be purchased? For $52,000 you can probably rent an actual porn star to have real life sex with you for an entire year. Obviously we’re not talking about the girls who work the jobs that pay $1,000 to $5,000. But I’d say your average, C+ porn star can be bought for 50 grand a year, no? I mean, last time I checked you could buy one username and get access to like 50 sites. How many sites can you possibly buy? Just spend that money on real life whores and get some actual bang for your buck.
