Mac's Interpretive Dance On Always Sunny Was Such A Flex

Last night’s episode of Sunny was the Season 13 finale. As they’ve done throughout these later season episodes, they tried something new. The Sunny gang is well aware they are grandfathered into the world of TV. They have enough clout and enough rope to do basically whatever the fuck they want. From pushing the envelope with comedy to creating different types of storytelling episodes. They are always doing new, risky, unique things.

None more unique than Mac’s interpretive dance. The episode chronicles Mac trying to fully come to terms with being gay and fully coming out in order to truly feel gay pride. Frank convinces him he needs to come out in “his own way” and specifically to his father to accomplish this. And this is what he did. All of Rob McHelleny’s hard work getting into shape came to a head with this 5 minute dance alongside a professional ballerina.  Such a remarkable flex from everyone involved. Like yea, sure, you’re used to us joking in the bar and just being drunk idiots and degenerate pieces of shit, but also I can bust out some ballet on you motherfuckers. Rob had tweeted before the episode aired that they took a risk:

And then followed up afterward:

Honestly I dont even think it was very risky. I think Sunny fans have been along for the ride for so long now, and have seen the story arc of Mac develop so intensely, that I cant imagine anybody had a problem with this all coming to fruition in a unique way. For a one time thing? A special scene designed to make you go “Holy shit!”? I cant imagine anybody was upset by that. I mean the rest of that episode was vintage Sunny with Frank’s bloody nose, Mac’s dad, and the typical gay Mac jokes. Even the times during the dance when they panned to the crowd of inmates, it was still funny. Rob wanted to peacock and show his colors and did something that nobody (including himself) thought he could do. Any true Sunny fan would appreciate that. If you had a problem with that scene you’re an asshole and you dont deserve the Gang. If you didnt like it, thats fine. Obviously. But if you aggressively disliked it you’re probably just a bigot or something. I’ll follow the Gang to the depths of hell and to the peak of the rainbow.

PS – I think Mac turned my kids gay
