Monday Homestretch

Since last week’s volatile ride for major averages has talking heads speaking more and more about an inevitable market correction, it’s fitting that today marks the 89th anniversary of Black Tuesday, which was actually the fourth and last day of the stock market crash of 1929… Not to be confused with Black-Face Tuesday, which is the name of the Halloween party Megyn Kelly is throwing at her crib tomorrow night.

Kimmel and Fallon are both going, apparently.

Ted Danson and Whoopi will not be in attendance.

During the four days of the ’29 crash, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 25 percent and investors lost just over $30 billion.  To put that in perspective, $30 billion was 10 times more than the 1929 federal budget, and more than the United States spent on World War I.

After the crash, stock prices continued to fall. They hit bottom on November 13.  By then, more than $100 billion had disappeared from the American economy ($1.3 trillion in today’s terms ).  This kicked-off the Great Depression, as what followed was a complete loss of confidence in the U.S. financial system. So much so, the Dow didn’t regain its pre-crash high until November 23, 1954… 25 years later.

Monday Afternoon Confession-

funny_pictures_7

I scraped another car’s back corner panel with my bumper while pulling out of a spot in a grocery store parking lot yesterday.  I was about to leave a note until I saw they had a çoêxïst bumper sticker, and for some reason, I just sped away smiling ear-to-ear along a bumpy road with Lindsey Pelas in my passenger seat…

I probably shouldn’t feel so good about it, but I do.

Random Question-In a cultural vacuum, where you know the identity of neither of these gents, and I ask you which one of them contracted HIV in the early-90’s?

10 out of 10 picks Steve Harvey, no?

I don’t mean to beat this non-dead horse, but I get the flu and I look like I have AIDS.  Tragic Johnson has the virus that can lead to AIDs, and he looks fucking amazing… God bless him.

BOXING- For those who opted for any of the 100 other sporting events this weekend, Danny Jacobs eeked out a split decision win over former sparring partner Sergiy Derevyanchenko on Saturday night, claiming the vacant IBF middleweight belt.  It was Danny’s 35th win and first recognized world title (2nd overall), and it came 7 years after doctors performed a six-hour surgery to remove a softball sized cancerous tumor that was wrapped around Jacobs’ spinal cord.

I mention this fight because a Mayweather-less Welterweight division (that still contains Thurman, Porter, Crawford, and Spence) is now taking a backseat to the Middleweights, and Danny has the opportunity for a megafight come spring with either Canelo, Jermall Charlo, or a possible rematch vs GGG.

I HATE NY (postponed)- I sometimes like to use Monday’s Homestretch as an opportunity to whine like a bitch about what I do not like about this city.  However, given the state of New York athletics, specifically yesterday, when the Rangers, Jets, Giants, and Nets all lost (thank God for the Islanders, I guess), coupled with the success of NY’s biggest baseball rival winning the World Series in a dominant fashion over a team that has fans bring milk to games, AND having the only NFL team that actually plays in NY probably losing tonight in MNF to that same regional rival, I will give the place a break.

Here’s to happier times, New York…

We’ll pick the hate back up next week.

Take a report.
