Keeping Things In Perspective As The Red Sox Celebrate Their World Series

(As you read this blog, please keep in mind that approximately 400 people around the globe will perish from our planet). 

The Red Sox won the World Series last night. The beat the Dodgers 4-1 in the series to win their 4th championship in 15 seasons.

Hooray?

Some people were wondering how I handled it as a die-hard Yankees fan. Well, I handled it just fine. I realized there are more important things in life. Forget baseball, let’s talk about the things that really matter, not some little game grown men play.

As Boston celebrates this little World Series, I want to throw some numbers at you for you to keep in the back of your mind. From that Twitter thread and more.

-11.3% of the world suffers from hunger. Think this World Series solves that? No.

-According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. But “yaaaaayy Red Sox”

-1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. The Red Sox won a baseball game.

-Number of children in the world: 2.2 billion
Number in poverty: 1 billion (every second child)

Less focus on baseball. More focus on helping these kids

-In 2018, Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict”. Murad is the first Iraqi to be awarded a Nobel prize.

Let’s celebrate them tonight. Not ball players

-1.6 billion people — a quarter of humanity — live without electricity. Hope you enjoyed watching the game on your flatscreen TV last night.

-315,000 women die in childbirth every year because they were malnourished and lacked basic nutrients. Think that crossed David Price’s mind on the mound last night?

-Some will celebrate the Red Sox tonight…. I’ll be celebrating a different team. Doctors Without Borders for their humanitarian rescue work. Risking their lives to care for those in need.

-Did everyone just forget about Ebola? I didn’t.

-Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. Yet these millionaire Red Sox players have no problems signing their contracts.

-The selfish Red Sox want you to forget that it’s breast cancer awareness month. Keep your priorities straight. Buy this shirt and all proceeds go to the Save The Ta-Tas Foundation.
