There's A Potential Scandal Brewing At TCU Involving Gary Patterson After Kevontae Turpin's Arrest

On Sunday morning, Kavontae Turpin was arrested for an allegedly egregious assault on his girlfriend:

SOURCE-According to the arrest affidavit, which was obtained by the Star-Telegram, Turpin and his girlfriend, Raiesha Atwater, got into an altercation late Saturday night in which he “dragged” her across a parking lot and “slammed” her to the ground at an apartment complex located at 3517 South University Drive.

Atwater told officers the two had been romantically involved for five years and the altercation stemmed from Turpin believing she had sent photos of herself to other people.

Turpin was suspended by TCU because of this. It was thought that the story would end right there. News then came out over another arrest of Turpin back in March:

SOURCE-New Mexico has an active bench warrant out for Turpin, who failed to appear in court earlier this year, the Las Cruces Magistrate Court confirmed Monday.

Turpin was arrested March 15 in Las Cruces, New Mexico and charged with battery of a household member, criminal damage to a household property under $1000 and interference with communications, according to the arrest affidavit. Turpin pleaded not guilty to battery charges and household property damage.

Turpin is not a nobody. I’d argue he is one of the best players they have. How on earth was he playing with an active bench warrant out on him without TCU knowing?

Uh oh.

SOURCE-TCU confirms that it was aware of an incident in New Mexico involving wide receiver KaVontae Turpin in March 2018. However, the university declines knowing that Turpin was also charged with battery of a family member, or that there was active bench warrant for his arrest.

“The football staff was aware there was an incident in New Mexico, but not that charges included an alleged battery,” TCU said in a statement. The publicly available information they reviewed at the time only showed a charge related to property damage. We did not know until yesterday that his legal issues were unresolved.”

This is not great news for Gary Patterson. There is a lot that needs to come out here. We don’t know everything about it, but hearing that a player is having legal issues and not checking in on its status is a total failure. Taking a college kids word and leaving it at that doesn’t seem to be a smart move.

Is that Gary Patterson’s job? Yes and no. His job is to coach the football team but he’s also the CEO of the program. If you hear a player is in legal issues it’s your job to make sure everything is figured out. You need to know about situations like this:
