The Fix- The man would turn on Netflix first thing in the morning and binge-watch shows and movies for more than seven hours every day. Internet addiction disorder is not officially recognized in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), but it’s very much a reality for some. A serious case of digital addiction in India highlights the serious effects of getting hooked on technology. According to The Hindu, last week a 26-year-old man became the first “Netflix addict” to seek treatment at the Service for Healthy Use of Technology (SHUT) clinic at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore. The man would turn on Netflix first thing in the morning and binge-watch shows and movies for more than seven hours every day to escape the reality of being unemployed. He did this for six months, the Hindu reports.

Uhhhhhhhhh so this is all of us, right? We all need to be checked into a mental hospital if this is the bar now. Everybody is sitting in front of their TVs watching hours upon hours upon hours of Netflix. Do you know how many good shows are on Netflix right now? A TON. Netflix might be pissed that a report like this is coming out but they could easily spin it into a positive. Netflix can now claim that Netflix is so good and has such quality content that it gets people addicted. Addicted to the point where people have to check themselves into mental hospitals. See how positive that sounds? That’s a great product. That logic doesn’t sound as good for a product like cigarettes because cancer but Netflix shows? Fuck yeah.

It’s not just Netflix, though. We’re all totally hooked and addicted to technology across the board. I guarantee that people claiming to be addicted to Netflix and other streaming services and social media in general is 1000% where we’re headed. We’re all already addicted to these things we just don’t call it addiction yet. It’s like when baseball players in the 90s all looked like The Hulk and, for whatever reason, not a single one of us raised our hand and was like, “Hey guys I think these dudes are on a bunch of steroids.” Same thing for technology addiction. It’s happening right in front of our faces and nobody is calling it what it is. The real truth is we’re all too busy staring at our phones to realize that we’re addicted to staring at our phones. I’m not too worried about it because I’m one of the addicted and I’m having a blast.
