In A Surprise Move, The Suns Have Fired GM Ryan McDonough

Phoenix Suns Introduce 2018 Draft Picks

Shams Bomb from the clounds on a Monday! Hired back in 2013 after working for 10 years in the Celtics organization, Ryan McDonough is out as GM of the Suns. Now granted, over his time there the Suns are a collective 155-255. Not exactly all that impressive. Things started out decent with a 48 win season in 2013-14, but the last three years of 23, 24, and 21 wins is going to make any owner a little antsy. The thing is, the Suns are clearly rebuilding, and I would say McDonough has done a pretty good job at acquiring talent. Guys like Booker, Jackson, and Ayton are legit young players. In the NBA, especially the West, this kind of thing takes time. It doesn’t help matters much that the Suns have a dickhead owner in Robert Sarver, who many consider one of the worst owners in the entire league.

But to be fair, it hasn’t always been great for McDonough. There was that whole sign 10,000 point guards back in 2014 that ultimately didn’t work. That was the year his old pal Danny Ainge essentially stole Isaiah Thomas from him, and we all know what happened with Isaiah next. He had one of the more impressive 2.5 year runs of any guard in the league. Their coaching situation has been a bit of a disaster during his tenure as well. Jeff Hornacek had some success early, but was ultimately fired after his 23-59 season. McDonough then went with Earl Watson, who was BRUTAL, before getting let go last season after an 0-3 start. It’s fair to say that during this tenure there hasn’t really been a whole lot of stability in the franchise, but again, this is a long process and honestly there are worst GMs out there I feel like. In my opinion you can’t cut the cord until you see how these young players turn out. Booker looks to be a potential All Star, and Josh Jackson showed promise his rookie season. That’s ultimately what I feel like McDonough’s legacy will be, not getting boned on a few trades.

It makes you wonder what happened. You fire a coach 3 games into the season last year, and then fire your GM 9 days heading into their season opener? You trusted him enough to make the biggest decision for your franchise (Ayton) and the don’t let him see out his plan? That’s pretty fucked up in my opinion. To me, this has Sarver written all over it, and if I’m a Suns fan that scares this shit out of me.

And sure, maybe they don’t have a starting PG right now, but honestly is that going to make all that much of a difference for their season? I say no. For a team that is tons of fun to watch late at night on League Pass, there is no other way to describe them right now than a full on dumpster fire. Now they need a GM and a PG, so the 2018-19 season is off to a hot start!
