Jason Garrett's Reason For Punting From His Opponent's 42 on 4th and 1 in OT Is All Time
“IT WAS A LONG ONE.”
Amazing. I respect Jason Garrett so much more now that he came out with that reason for punting in OT from his opponent’s 42. Doesn’t even pretend to have some analytic approach to the game, some numbers or math to back up his game plan, none of it. He just took a look, was like “shit, that might be 4, 4 and a half feet, better send out the punting unit”. It’s just incredible incompetence.
You should be going for it there in pretty much every situation in a game, nevermind in OT where you need to score. Punting is playing for a tie at very, very, very best. It’s so spineless and pathetic. Especially when you have a top 5 RB in the league and pride yourself on your Oline (even if they are trash, the Cowboys never shut up about their Oline). Like, you took a RB with a top 5 pick, put the ball in his hands and let him pick up a yard. The Cowboys new kicker Brett Maher is 11/12 on FGs this season with a long of 50, and he hit a long of 57 in preseason. So getting the first down makes it a 58 yarder, and you have 4 fresh downs vs a tired Texans defense to pick up additional yards. But he punted.
Oh, and this stat. It can’t possibly be true. There’s just no way it’s true:
But it is. It’s true. It’s damn true.
So good job Jason Garrett. You punted, gave the Texans the ball, and let DeAndre Hopkins spin all over your face. Hopefully the Cowboys reward Garrett with an extension. I want him there as long as possible.

Amazing.
