Happy Banner Day Boys and Girls and Babes!
I cannot believe how quickly time has flown. It feels like just yesterday I was hootin’ n hollerin when the Caps were down 2-0 to Columbus that we weren’t losing the series. It feels like just yesterday I said there’s no chance we lose to the Pens. It feels like just yesterday myself and PFT flew to Tampa to see the Caps spank the Bolts in game 7. And it feels like just yesterday I was sitting on the floor of my 1 BR Manhattan apartment because I didn’t own a couch yet, with two ear infections, watching the Caps win the Cup for the first time. And then the aftermath, as we gathered as a country and watched the most inspirational, most legendary Stanley Cup celebration bender this Earth has ever seen. We watched all Summer as each player had their day with the Cup, eating cereal and drinking champagne out of it. Earlier this week we saw the rings which are the prettiest freaking things I’ve ever seen.
And now tonight, 118 days later, hockey is officially back and the Caps will raise a Stanley Cup banner to the rafters for the first time. I’ve tried to let it soak in, but it still doesn’t seem real. Caps fans know more than anyone, it’s just so hard to win a Cup. It’s not that the teams in the years previous weren’t good enough, those teams were incredible, but it just wasn’t meant to be. And all of that pain was worth it to see Ovi and the boys finally lift it last year.
Tonight the banner goes up and we officially move on to the 2018-2019 season. I wish we could continue the Cup fun, but I guess we’ll just have to win it again.
