Blink-182 Has Surrendered Their September 20th Boston Date To Pup Punk

Sometimes, every now and then, one entity declares war on another, and before said war can even begin, a white flag is waved.

We see it all the time with the release dates of movies, where a studio like Disney can just challenge another blockbuster’s opening day by scheduling whatever film they’re putting out for the same date, and usually, the studio being challenged backs down and finds another day to open. It’s usually the sign of a true alpha that’s holding whichever industry they work in by the balls right now. Sometimes, a younger, uprising entity will challenge the top dogs in their industry directly to determine if they’ve usurped them, or at least gauge how close they are to doing so. The ol’ “To be the man…” mantra. Unfortunately, I’m here to report this has happened to one of my favorite bands of all time, and it really didn’t take them long to surrender.

Local pop-punk heroes ‘Pup Punk’ are the epitome of an overnight success, and played a huge role in reviving the genre from the dead in 2017. Obviously, that has sparked the question, “Does Pup Punk run the pop-punk genre now?” from any and all music outlets over the past year. Speaking as someone who’s in the band, we thought it was a given that we did. A forgone conclusion! We tore Irving Plaza to the fucking ground and it was like the 3rd time we’d played together as a band. I never even considered us not being the most popular pop-punk band in the world. Nobody has more teenage angst than us. NOBODY!

So, after the World Tour show was such a massive success, we had our record label (Gaz) start sending out feelers to venues in Boston to bring this party to the home of the Pirate Ship next. Some dates were held, some venues weren’t available, some just couldn’t guarantee they’ve be able to provide us the volume at which we demand to play at…it was a bit of a search. As all of this was ongoing, Frankie and I noticed that one of our favorite bands and biggest inspirations, Blink-182, announced a short little Fall tour with State Champs, and we were stoked! We looked into grabbing some tickets…and…we realized that they were planning on hitting the Boston market in September.

You see, we’re all for celebrating live music, and we love that our idols (well, 2/3 of them) are still going strong in the year of our lord 2018, but I thought it was pretty clear that we were the kingpins now, and if you want to play a show in the kingpin’s territory…you ask. And they didn’t ask.

So we said…

…and booked a show in the exact same city they were trying to play on September 20th on that exact date as theirs, in the exact same city. As a former declaration of war.

And they made the right call, and by that I mean they cancelled their entire tour.

Mark has reached out to us apologizing for the inconvenience profusely, which we have already forgiven him for. As a band, Pup Punk would like to truly apologize to any Blink-182 fans who had tickets to their 9/20 show in Boston. Our actions towards the trio weren’t personal at all, and we didn’t like having to do it, but that’s just the fight game. Business is business. To make it up to those folk, we’re going to play a few Blink songs on stage at the House of Blues on the 20th, and we’re gonna play them better than Mark, Travis, and whatshisfacenewguy ever have.
