In Honor of Davis Webb Being Cut By the Giants, Let's Look Back At When He Tried To Make Baker Mayfield His Towel Boy At Texas Tech

Oh, how the tables have turned. To start the 2013 college football season Baker Mayfield was walking on to Texas Tech to try and become the starting quarterback as a true freshman. On his first day of practice Baker was obviously behind in the depth chart to Michael Brewer and Davis Webb. With Brewer sidelined with a back injury, Webb was the anointed starter to begin training camp. He actually asked Mayfield to be his towel boy on day 1, trying to show him who was boss and who was going to be the little bitch. Yeah, Baker didn’t take that too lightly. Not only did he refuse to go fetch Webb his towels, but he used it as motivation to win the starting job as a true freshman walk-on. This little story is a microcosm of why Baker is who he is.

Baker frustratingly lost the starting job after getting injured and oddly never got it back despite the team starting to lose. He transferred to Oklahoma and the rest is history. Webb stayed at Tech for three years before going to Cal for his senior year. Mayfield won the Heisman and became the number one overall pick, while Webb went in the 3rd round in 2017. Now Mayfield is the future of the Cleveland Browns while Webb just got cut.

I think the Browns plan of action is simple: sign Webb to become Baker’s towel boy in Cleveland.
