What Are The Dumbest Rules In Sports?

So it’s a relatively slow day as we’re getting so close to football season therefore I decided to pose a question on Twitter. What’s the dumbest rule in sports? Take away paying players, free agency, salary cap, anything off the court/field. I’m talking specific to play. This was triggered also by watching some of Monday Night Football and seeing two more of those leading with the helmet calls. It’s obviously a pretty hot topic right now as people have takes left and right about it.

Listen, there’s no doubt there’s a million dumbass rules in sports. There’s a handful of different ways to improve all of them, but that’s not what this is about. This is about hate. This is about what one thing happens during a game that drives you nuts. Is there something that should be on the list here? Did we miss something? Let me know @barstoolreags

Without further ado the definitive list of the dumbest rules in sports:

Am I Deke Zucker? It’s possible since no one knows his identity and I agree that this is my least favorite rule. Too often we see a bullshit technical in college basketball about hanging on the rim or celebrating. In college football you aren’t even allowed to celebrate. It’s dumb as hell. Sports are supposed to be fun. Celebrating is fun. Put the two together and stop worrying about hurt feelings.

This is another one I never understood. I hate rewarding people for failing and that’s essentially what this rule is doing. You get 3 strikes. If all 3 strikes are exhausted you’re out. No exceptions. Let’s change this one. Why does the 3rd strike not matter?

I don’t hate this rule as much as others. That said, I think there could be an adjustment here. What about only advancing the ball after a stop? Don’t reward teams for a made bucket, but if they get a defensive rebound or turnover why not let them advance then? There are obviously pros and cons to advancing the ball vs not and I don’t feel strong enough about either one. We’ve had some awesome moments because of both.

This one came through a decent amount and yeah it’s a bit confusing. My one question is where do you give the team the ball if they fumble out of the end zone? I agree that they should get the ball back, but where do you put it? Where they fumble originally would be my vote or at like the 2 or 5 yard line. Something specific like that.

Imagine if KFC or Clem didn’t get to see Big Sexy hit a homer though. It’s hilarious to watch these guys get swings but it does feel like a waste.

Completely disagree here. I have no problem with defensive three seconds. You really want to watch games in the 70s again? I wish college basketball instituted defensive three seconds. Keep the lane open, get rid of some of these terrible block/charge calls and just play hoops. People don’t want to watch games that are low scoring – sorry Virginia and Cincinnati fans.

A common complaint, but I don’t feel strongly one way or another. What happens when a guard ties up a big, it’s not like the defensive team has an advantage there.

I couldn’t disagree more. I want all coaches to wear full uniforms. Imagine Andy Reid in full on pads and helmet or Huggy Bear in a West Virginia uniform? Let’s go that way and not make everyone wear suits.

Yeah, I want to see some adjustment here. Move the ball back to the 50 or something like that compared to sudden death. That said, we will lose some fun moments when it comes to the sudden death rules. But, yeah, I’d much rather see the college style with the ball starting farther back.
