Fighting Has No Place In Professional Sports

Yesterday was a sad, sad day in the world of professional sports. A black eye (no pun intended) on the entire institution. Let’s just get a quick little rundown on the events that transpired on Tuesday August 14, 2018.

– You had Yasiel Puig and Nick Hundley sparking a bench clearing brawl in the Dodgers vs Giants game in LA. Truly deplorable behavior by all individuals involved.

– And then we make our way to the National Football League where the Cleveland Browns had not 1, not 2, but 3 scuffles go down during a training camp practice. Highlighted by this dust up between Jarvis Landry and Terrance Mitchell.

I mean… come on, guys. I understand that fights may be “exciting” and “entertaining” to some. But all I see here is a bunch of grown men acting like children. It sickens me. Just think about the example they’re setting for the kids. You think they’re not seeing this? Because they are. And when they see Yasiel Puig fight or when they see Jarvis Landry fight, all of a sudden they think it’s okay for them to fight as well. Is that really the lesson we want to be teaching our youths? And even if you don’t care about the kids, it’s just barbaric. It’s dangerous. It takes away from the game. If we wanted to see a boxing match, we would have paid to go see a boxing match. I thought we, as human beings, have evolved past the days of gladiators. It saddens me to think that I’ve been sorely mistaken.

The only thing we can do now is just hope that we can all learn and grow from yesterday’s atrocities. In the meantime, at least we still have sweet, sweet innocent hockey.
