A School District In South Carolina Is Replacing Snow Days With Online Classes

ANDERSON, South Carolina — We all remember that feeling of euphoria as kids, you wake up on a cold, snowy morning and hear those two magical words, “snow day!”  Well, it looks like that will soon become a thing of the past in one school district. Pause for the gasps of horror, yes, a school district in South Carolina is ditching snow days. Instead, the district will require students to do classwork online instead of watching television reruns or indulging in a Netflix binge. Last week, Anderson School District Five announced on Facebook it was selected to pilot the first eLearning program in the state of South Carolina. Here’s how it works: When nasty weather strikes, these students will need to review assignments using their school-issued Chromebooks, which don’t require internet access. The assignments will be uploaded via Google Classroom.

BLASPHEMY! Technology has officially taken things too far. We knew it would happen one day and it has. We thought it would come in the form of Artificial Intelligence taking over the world and killing all humans. Nope. Technology has taken it too far when it replaces snow days with online classes. Snow days are the greatest thing when you’re a kid. A giant snowstorm rolls through town, blankets everything and allows you to watch The Price Is Right and play video games in your pajamas all day.

Or my favorite was when you’d go to bed and nothing was guaranteed. You’d check the weather report before going to bed and hope and pray you’d wake up to school being cancelled. It was almost like gambling cause you wouldn’t do the homework assignment that was due the next day cause you’d convince yourself school was gonna get cancelled. Then around 7am your mom would poke her head into your room and say, “School’s cancelled.” No amount of drugs or alcohol can match that feeling. It was the absolute best.

So to rob kids of that feeling is unAmerican and I’d argue should be illegal. Online classes? Get the fuck outta here. School is important (kinda) but it’s not important enough where you need to force kids to do assignments online when snow makes it impossible to get to school. Let kids be kids and snow days are maybe the best part of being a kid. I would take this to the Supreme Court if I were still a kid.

PS- Real talk though, live look at all of us who got to enjoy snow days laughing at the current generation who doesn’t get them
