Mets Prospect Peter Alonso Hit A Home Run In Yesterday's Futures Game That Still Hasn't Landed

Holy moly I love everything about that blast. The “wooooweeeee” call once that round collection of cowhide started flying, the pitcher’s soul being crushed, Alonso admiring the fuck out of it, the subtle batflip, and the fact that it’s impossible to find the ball once it leaves his bat. I think the baseball actually flew to the spot of the atmosphere where gravity ceases to exist and will likely land on one of the space stations that are floating around the planet. Oh yeah and it pretty much broke Statcast’s brain.

Yes I know Peter Alonso won’t be brought up to help the Mets this season even though stories about him have been one of the few bright spots to this nightmarish year. It won’t be because he has struggled since getting called up to Triple-A despite Vegas being a hitter’s paradise or because the Big League club that may have the worst home batting average in more than a CENTURY couldn’t use him. But because the Wilpons will likely keep him in the Minors as long as possible so his service time clock doesn’t start. Tim Tebow will be their September draw anyway. And you know what? I’m oddly okay with it. I know that Mets rebuilds don’t happen in a year like they did for the Yankees or even a few years like they do for most teams whose addresses reside in big markets (I would NEVER call the Mets a big market team in the post-Madoff Era). Mets rebuilds take forever. The team is about to enter the dark ages again. Like I said before the 2015 season, the Mets and their fans are like cicadas. Years go by where people forget we exist. But after years of death and silence, we rise from the ashes like a phoenix and people complain about how loud and annoying we are. Unfortunately that brief period of life just ended with a gut-wrenching World Series loss and Wild Card loss before we slipped back into baseball death’s cold embrace. But until we rise again in about 2 World Cups or so, videos like this will keep us convinced that our time in the sun will come again.
