Tiger And Phil Should Have To Risk Their Own $10 Million For Their Head-to-Head Match

The Masters - Preview Day 2

Golf Channel Patrick Reed: “I would pay a little bit more to watch it if it was for their own money, for sure… It’s going to be entertaining. I think it would be more entertaining if it was for their own money because I think the guys would grind even harder.

“I’ll be curious to see it because I feel like one match, 18 holes, not your own money, it’s just kind of an exhibition.”

So Tiger and Phil are obviously playing a match for $10 million, winner take all. It’s great except for one thing: it’s not their money. It’s sponsorship money so it’s just a show up and get paid event where one makes $10M and the other and his team will definitely get some sort of appearance cash. You know how you make it great? The two risk their own money and the loser has to write the winner a check for $10M on the 18th green. It’s tough to motivate two guys worth hundreds of millions of dollars but one way to do it is to threaten them with the humiliation of handing their generational rival a $10M check of their own money on the 18th green. That’s a clip that would be replayed forever. That’s a humiliating hit on their resume that will never go away. Neither cares all that much if they lose out on $10M of someone else’s money to a guy in a fuck around match for prime time TV; both care intensely about avoiding the humiliation of coughing up a ton of their own cash to the other.
