Cubs Trade Jeff Samardzija And Jason Hammel To A's For Top Prospect Addison Russell

Here’s what I know. Jeff Samardzija wasn’t coming back to the Cubs. They offered him a deal a few weeks ago, admittedly a low ball one, and he refused. He’s going to get top dollar in free agency, the Cubs were not willing to pay him top dollar. So that’s what we’re working with, a guy who you get nothing for if you don’t deal. So what did Theo and Jed do? They went out and got a top 15 prospect in Addison Russell. Yes he plays shortstop, yes we have Starlin and Javy Baez but guess what, you don’t pass up a top 15 guy for a guy who is walking just because there is some made up “logjam”. The Cubs are STACKED with talent now. They just got as close to top dollar as you can for Shark. Is a small part of me sad to see him go? Of course, I loved watching Samradzija pitch, but you have to think in realities here, the Cubs just took another great step forward in the long term. Things are happening, this is all happening.
