With the 23rd pick in the MLB Draft last night the New York Yankees selected Mr. Versatile, Anthony Seigler. Why do I call him Mr. Versatile? Well, that’s because he plays literally every single position on the diamond. Seigler is a catcher by trade, but also pitches and can play pretty much any of the other seven positions on the field. He’s a switch hitter at the plate and a switch thrower on the mound, capable of hitting 90 with either arm. The Yankees have been down this road before with a switch pitcher when they drafted Pat Venditte in the 20th round of the 2008 draft. Pat never saw big league time with the Yankees and to this day has only pitched in 54.1 innings in the majors between the A’s, Mariners, Jays, and now Dodgers. It was a pretty cool experiment at the time, but it never worked out.

Seigler is different than Venditte in the sense that he’s going to be a hitter in the big leagues as opposed to a pitcher. When the Yankees made their selection, they announced him as a catcher and that’s what he’s going to be. Some scouts see him ending up at second or third, but it does not appear that the mound will be an option. His bat is very good and his skills behind the plate are solid with an arm that can be plus at times. Obviously the Yankees taking a catcher will turn some heads with 25 year old Gary Sanchez being the future at the moment. But let’s remember that Seigler is 18 and has a ways to go before he’s realistically going to be called up. Who knows what the Yankees situation is in three years? Gary could be the everyday DH by then for all we know (my prediction).

Seigler, like Jacoby Ellsbury, is of the Navajo Tribe and is looking to be the next Native American to debut in the majors since Joba Chamberlain. Religion is big deal to him and he loves God, a personal eye-roller for me, but to each their own. Just hit the baseball and we’ll be fine. He also dresses fly as a motherfucker so you know he’s got confidence. One thing that will have to change with him is that flow. Yeah that won’t fly with the Yankees, man.

What was really funny about this pick was how Tommy Smokes and I randomly talked about Seigler on Friday’s show of The Short Porch. We called him an asshole and to be honest he really is one for playing every single position, switch-hitting, and switch-pitching. Like dude, we get it, you’re really good at baseball. The audio is pretty funny.

Later in the draft, the Yankees had Nick Swisher announce their 2nd round pick and of course the kid’s last name is pronounced “Bro.”

Josh Breaux is ANOTHER catcher with a rocket arm. He mashes the baseball with exceptional raw power and can top triple digits when on the mound. It can’t hurt to stock up on catchers I guess these days, especially ones that can pitch as well. Maybe the plan with him is to see if they can use that arm talent on the mound and create a mini-Ohtani? That might be where organization’s heads are at after seeing his impact so far this year.
