Top Gun 2 Has Started Production

Think whatever you want of Top Gun being overrated or not wanting a reboot, but this was an absolutely baller way to drop that they’re starting production. Right now it’s titled “Top Gun: Maverick” and is directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, Only The Brave). According to Variety this is what we know so far:

“Although the plot is being kept under wraps, it’s been previously reported that Cruise’s character would now be a flight instructor and that the film would explore a world of drone technology, fifth-generation fighters and the end of the era of dog-fighting.”

I’m curious how they’re going to work through this plot if Cruise is an instructor. Is there going to be another young pilot that Cruise will serve as the Jester to? Is Cruise going to be the old man yelling at the clouds saying that manual fighter pilots are better than drones because humans can’t be hacked(And then the drones MIRACULOUSLY get hacked and they have to fight them)? My guess is the latter. I’m also just running on the assuming that at one point he is going to fly a F-35 and do a vertical takeoff because, well, of course. I’ll eat my hat if some version of this scene doesn’t happen in the opening act.

Kosinski’s proejcts have all been good or at least ok. “Oblivion” and “Tron: Legacy” were solid turn off your brain movies (although Oblivion tried to be sort of meta) and “Only The Brave” had an overwhelmingly positive critical and audience response. So I think there’s a solid chance he can make something decent out of this. 80’s reboots have been a pretty mixed bag, with the lows being LOW (Red Dawn, The A-Team, The Karate Kid, *Every Horror remake*) and the high’s being pretty damn fun (21 Jump Street, and to a much lesser extent Robocop). The best we can really hope for is that they don’t try too hard to make it deeper or darker than what it was. Also, can I get a hell yea for the Bussy man Tom Cruise making a swift comeback from “the Mummy”!

Can’t wait to see Cruise and his fake ass destroy some drones so I can forget that disaster of a movie and the dark universe in general. Also, I would be doing everyone a diservice if I didn’t show you this photo of Cruise and his middle tooth.
