Pretending To Be A Business Owner In Order To Get The Pac-12 Network Should Not Be Illegal

[KVOA] – The finance manager of an Illinois car dealership has been accused of pretending to be a Lake Delton restaurant employee in phone calls with a cable company.

His aim, police say, was to change the restaurant’s cable package so he could watch a basketball game when he visited the area for the weekend. Sauk County prosecutors have charged 51-year-old Kevin M. Cayton of Arlington Heights, Illinois, with felony identity theft for financial gain and unauthorized use of an entity’s identifying information. Each charge carries a maximum six-year prison sentence.

In the calls, a man who identified himself as Pat Barkley asked to add the Pac-12 channel to the restaurant’s cable package. He mentioned wanting to watch an Arizona Wildcats basketball game later that week.

I’ll be honest here. I don’t blame Kevin Cayton one iota for pretending to be a business owner in order to watch his beloved Arizona Wildcats on the Pac-12 Network. In fact, I think the Pac-12 Network should pay all of his court bills and make sure he doesn’t get charged, considering the crimes carry a max of 6 years in jail. It’s not his fault the Pac-12 Network is garbage and roughly 12 people have access to it.

I can’t love this move more though. I mean desperate times call for desperate measures. Kevin knew his Wildcats needed his eyes. They were in the middle of a rough season with FBI investigations, reports and suspensions all over the place. The last thing they could afford was not having Kevin M. Cayton watch them in Illinois.

Could you imagine being the restaurant owner though? First off, I’m shocked he checks his cable bill, I didn’t know people still do that. Then to see the Pac-12 Network on there for a ‘substantial charge.’ How much is it to get the Pac-12 Network? I figured it was like $10/month more, not some significant charge like the report says.

Either way, it’s safe to say that the Pac-12 Network sucks and Kevin Cayton needs to have all charges dropped right this second. He’s just a diehard Arizona fan trying to watch his team. That’s not a crime.
