Has Any City Had A Worse 12 Months In Sports Than What Houston Just Had?

We all know what happened yesterday. Texans got up to a 21-0 lead and then Bill O'Brien tried to get too cute. I don't know when coaches will learn you always need to step on the throat, but that's a fight for a different day. This is a blog about the misery of Houston sports over the last year. I know people from like Detroit or Cleveland or somewhere like that will chime in. No one has had a worse 12 months in sports than Houston, because Detroit/Cleveland stink. They aren't relevant enough to compete and have hearts broken. Let's take a run through the last 12 months:

January 2019:

Texans lose 21-7 at home to the Colts in the playoffs. This is the start of people questioning if we'll ever get to see Deshaun Watson play in a championship level game.

Good news for Houston! Nothing happened in February. But then March happened.

March 2019

Tyler Herro decided to go ahead and end Houston's season with my favorite shot of the NCAA Tournament.

This was a dream season for Houston. They were a 3 seed. They had all the makings of a Final Four type team. They rejuvenated the city into college hoops again - really for the first time since Phi Slamma Jamma. But Tyler Herro is a walking bucket and that ended Houston basketball fun.

April/May 2019:

The Rockets keep thinking they have a chance to beat the Warriors. Kevin Durant hurt himself in game 5 even! This was the one team the Rockets kept talking about needing to beat. Instead they blow a couple close games, ultimately losing in 6 games.

July 2019

I'm not even saying that trading Chris Paul was a bad decision. It was clear that CP3 and Harden fucking hated each other. But look at what they gave up to land Russ, who is a great player but doesn't really fit what the Rockets want to do. We'll see how it pans out long term, but uh, as of now, we'll put this here because Paul remembered to be great again.

August 2019

They just gave away Jadeveon Clowney. Just poof, here you go Seattle. Also I really just needed something for August.

September 2019

Houston football was one of the more entertaining teams in the country and a decent program with Greg Ward and Tom Herman/Major Applewhite. Then our guy Dana went there and is trying to rebuild the program. D'Eriq King decided to sit out for this year after the 4-game redshirt rule and then there was a whole is he transferring, is he not transferring. They went 4-8 this year.

October 2019

Daryl Morey tweeted about Hong Kong and that set off a damn near international battle.

At the same time the Astros fired assistant GM Brandon Taubaum, who was regarded as a great front office guy. He was fired for lying essentially about celebrating that they brought in alleged domestic abuser Roberto Osuna. It led to a back and forth with Sports Illustrated and was just an embarrassing look for Astros.

Oh, but they made the World Series. Let's see how that went:

Oh.

November 2019

The first rumors of the Astros stealing signs and cheating start to surface. Meanwhile, this all starts happening right after the Astros lost the World Series. Great timing!

December 2019

One of the weirdest plays I've ever seen. The refs just don't see James Harden dunk the ball, don't give him two points leading to a complete collapse by the Rockets and a failed protest.

January 2020

The Texans finish up the year of suck with a blown 24-0 lead.

And quite literally as I'm writing this, the Astros GM and manager get suspended for a damn year.

Just an incredible year of terrible sports stuff. Again, save me the shitty franchises like Detroit or Cleveland or anything like that. No one has had a worse year than Houston.
