Taylor Hall Getting Traded Back To Edmonton Would Be One Of The Greatest Stories In Hockey History

Edmonton Oilers v New Jersey Devils

It was one of the most infamous trades the world of hockey has ever seen. June 29, 2016. The trade was one for one: Adam Larsson for Taylor Hall.

Now truth be told, it’s not like the trade has been a total monster of a win for either team. Sure, Taylor Hall won the Hart Trophy in 17-18 but what have the Devils done since he’s been there? Finished 8th in the Metro his first year and they got the 1st overall pick. Made it to the playoffs his 2nd year but they got gentleman’s swept in the first round by Tampa. Last year he only played 33 games and the Devils finished last in the Metro again, and again got the 1st overall pick. So he won a Hart Trophy, sure, but by all accounts the Devils have still suck a considerable amount of ass. Same goes for Edmonton.

So while the trade itself was hilarious and you could make the case that the Oilers were still losers in the deal since they should have gotten more back in return, it hasn’t worked out for either team. And now that the Devils have started off the year 0-4-2, shit their pants on a nightly basis and have almost zero hope of re-signing Taylor Hall in the offseason? Well according to Elliotte Friedman, they might just try to get as much back in return for him now while they can. So why not try to fleece the Oilers again?

I’m not entirely sure how that would work out considering the Oilers can barely afford to pay another minor leaguer right now. Maybe RNH goes to New Jersey, Draisaitl can move back to that 2C spot and Taylor Hall can play LW on the McDavid line? And maybe if they really want to free up some cap space to be able to sign Hall in the offseason, they can package Adam Larsson in there as well and just do a total backsies. I don’t know how it would happen but all I do know is that we need it to happen. It would be the perfect way for that trade to end. If just 3 and a half years later everybody was just like “ah fuck nevermind, let’s just pretend that never happened”.

Personally, I think the Oilers and Devils should just become swingers. Just start swapping around all of your 1st overall picks. McDavid in New Jersey one night. Hischier in Edmonton the next. Then Hughes to Edmonton and out of nowhere we get Nail Yakupov in a Devils jersey. Just a thought. But goddamn do I love it when these two organizations do business together. Need this trade to happen. Don’t get my hopes up just to let me down, Friedge.
