Movie Trailer Roundup

1. Destroyer

This is a really out of nowhere movie for such a high-profile actress. I love complex crime drama/revenge plots, but I’m definitely a little skeptical after the failure of ‘Peppermint’. I can’t say this trailer didn’t get me a little hyped up, though. It stars Nicole Kidman (Australia), Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla), Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Bradley Whitford (Get Out). Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux) is directing off a Phil Hay (Clash of the Titans) and Matt Manfredi (R.I.P.D.) script.

2. The Kid Who Would Be King

In an age where everyone is bitching about the lack of originality, this is a tough one to take seriously. Even worse is this coming so close to ‘King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword’ which was a steaming pile of poopie. That all said, this movie isn’t really for us as so much for the kids I guess. The adult stars are Patrick Stewart (American Dad) and Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible: Fallout). The main kid is played by Louis Ashbourne Serkis, the child of Lorraine Ashbourne and motion capture legend Andy Serkis. After just learning it after typing it, I’m all the way in on this movie.

3. High Life

Robert Pattinson is on a hot streak after how awesome ‘Good Time’ was, so I’m thinking he rides that wave right into this movie. He stars along with Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), André Benjamin (Four Brothers) and Mia Goth (Everest). Claire Denis (Beau Travail) wrote and directed this action-horror flick.

4. Jonathan

Ansel Elgort needs something to wash the stink of ‘Billionaire Boys Club’ off. I like this idea of a split-consciousness battle almost in the vein of ‘Fight Club’ except you’re aware of it the whole time. Co-starring with Elgort is Patricia Clarkson (Parks and Recreation), Suki Waterhouse (Insurgent) and Matt Bomer (Magic Mike). This is director Bill Oliver‘s first full-length movie.

5. Miss Bala

I loooooved Gina Rodriguez in ‘Annihilation’, and this is a cool double agent-type story. I am also a huge, huuuuuuuge fan of her co-star here Anthony Mackie because he is one of the most endearing and hilarious actors in hollywood. Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) is directing this action-thriller.

6. The Aftermath

There is a million movies made about WWII, but not a lot about the post-war effect on families, reconstruction etc. I like the conceptual idea of weaving in prejudice-turned romance plot around this time period, and I’m excited to see this stable of actors as the ones to experiment with it. Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl) is the star, along with Jason Clarke (Mudbound) and Alexander Skarsgård (Hold the Dark). James Kent (Testament of Youth) is directing this novel-turned-movie.
