People- When Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer three months ago, fans were shocked. But now the beloved Trebek has good news to share: He’s in “near remission,” according to doctors. “It’s kind of mind-boggling,” the 78-year-old says, in PEOPLE’s new cover story. Although the cancer has a 9 percent survival rate, Trebek has been responding very well to chemotherapy. “The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory…some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.”

“I’ve got a couple million people out there who have expressed their good thoughts, their positive energy directed towards me and their prayers,” he says. “I told the doctors, this has to be more than just the chemo, and they agreed it could very well be an important part of this.”

THE BIGGEST OF MOODS:

Well I didn’t expect to get a wonderful story like this to drop from the clouds on a casual Wednesday morning but I’ll sure as hell take it. I think we all prayed for the best and feared the worst when Alex Trebek let the world know about his stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Anybody who has ever dealt with that retched disease knows how much of a monster it can be regardless of what stage it is in.

But Alex has handled pancreatic cancer the same way he has handled hosting duties on Jeopardy the last few decades. By absolutely dominating it. He’s obviously not out of the woods yet. But any time you use the phrase mind-boggling in a good sense to describe your battle with cancer, it’s a pretty good thing. So keep those prayers coming to the Gameshow GOAT so we can see him and Big Brain James share a stage for years to come as the trivia version of LeBron and Wade, with Alex throwing the clues up and James slamming the answers down in the form of a question.
