The Fan Who Heckled Bryce Harper Is A Boston Fan Who Got Drunk And Wanted To Get Under Bryce's Skin And Then He Felt Bad And Has Now Apologized

Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies

So last night this came out that Bryce got into it with a fan in the right field seats who apparently “crossed the line” with trash talk and heckling him. I had a good laugh and wrote a blog about it because the irony of Bryce talking about getting “back to Philly and the great fans there” is not lost on me. In fact, it almost sounds like he was saying that with sarcasm on purpose, a way of needling the Nationals fans. Fair play, right?

Also in the blog I wrote:

But really, really, I can’t believe that Tweet/quote is real. I mean obviously if fans were shouting things about his wife or kid that’s messed up

Because even if other fan bases get super personal, there’s never a good reason to bring someone’s family into it. Yell at Bryce, make fun of how he has to live in Philly and miss the playoffs for 12 more years, heckle him, whatever. But usually if someone is getting super personal someone else should be like “alright man, chill out, he’s still a human, it’s not that serious”.

Well, after I wrote that blog I got the following DMs:

So yeah. As it turns out it’s just a random Red Sox fan who goes to school in DC who got drunk at a Nats game who wanted to get under Bryce’s skin. He said “your son is embarrassed of you” and then he felt bad and wanted to apologize. So that’s where we’re at.

Here’s my thoughts- every fan base has bad eggs. I think Nats fans are a bit peeved because Bryce is trying to act like in his 7 years in DC he never heard much, muchhhhh worse from Philly fans. Shit, I read worse on Twitter in tweets we were both tagged in from over the years. I don’t think “your son is embarrassed of you” is really that bad. His son is 1 month old, he doesn’t even have the mental capability to be embarrassed. He just poops all day.

But I get it, family should probably be off limits, I think that is fair. We can talk forever about where the line for chirps is drawn. If the fan said “I hope your son dies in a fire while you watch”, that is very bad, we can all agree. If he yells something about his wife, pretty much anything, also bad. Embarrassed of you? We’ve all heard worse. But again, family, etc. Stay away.

I’m sort of shocked this is a big deal. I think a lot has to do with the fact the Nats just eliminated the Phils from the playoffs and clinched the playoffs with the Phillies and Bryce in town, who are currently sitting in 4th place in the NL East. Sometimes you just get frustrated and get pissed off, it happens.

Let’s just all agree to not talk about people’s babies. I think that’s fair.

Oh and the fact it was a Boston fan who just wanted to get drunk and heckle Bryce Harper on a Wednesday night, well that’s just poetic.
