I Am Terrified That We Are Once Again Being Absolutely Suckered By Dan Snyder

Look at that guy. Just look at him. Ugh. Not the way anyone wants to start their day, I apologize for that. But the point remains, that’s the man who owns the Washington Redskins, and has owned the Washington Redskins for the last 2 decades. That’s the man who has held our fates as football fans in his hands for the better part of my lifetime. That’s the man who has taken the team that people used to fear playing on the road and turned them into another home game for the opponent. That is the man who more or less has ruined football for an entire generation of football fans. That’s who Daniel Snyder is.

*Takes big deep breath*

So now. Now, now, now. Here we are. The year of the lord 2020. What a made up sounding year. Like a year they would put in movies back in the day because nobody expected the year 2020 to ever exist. But somehow, some way, we are actually living in 2020, so give yourself a pat on the back for that. I guess some people reading this were born in like…1997, so it’s not *that* far fetched to you, but I know there are also some people reading this that were born in 1976 so you must be astonished that you’re still alive. Nevertheless, it is 2020 and the Redskins are officially the laughing stock of the NFL. This last year was the 6th year I have written for Barstool, and all 6 years now the Redskins have been a never-ending soap opera. Look at this tweet from 6 (SIX!!!) years ago…

And 5 years ago….

And don’t forget this classic quote….

I mean every single year it’s been terrible

It’s actually amazing how nothing EVER changed

After 10 terrible seasons, 100 losses, 0 playoff wins, and a million typed words on the internet, Dan Synder has finally fired Bruce Allen. And obviously I’m ecstatic. Bruce Allen has been a torture chamber to me. An absolute scumbag who I have nothing good to say about whatsoever. Not only that, I’ve never even heard anyone else say anything good about him. Like, often times you’ll hear someone be like “no, he’s actually a good guy behind the scenes” or something like that. Nope. Never even once have heard that said about him.

But the million dollar question is- does it matter? And that question horrifies me. We have long wanted Bruce Allen fired. Now he has been fired, and I can’t help but wonder how much it will actually matter. This is what I wrote when Jay Gruden was fired:

And there we go. Jay Gruden, gone. Kinda knew this was gonna happen all week. Was the worst kept secret in town. And now it’s official. But as I’ve been talking about, it doesn’t mater. Jay Gruden isn’t the issue. It starts at the top and trickles it’s way down. With Dan and Bruce here, nothing changes. Jay is simple just a casualty of the system. Another name on a long list of coaches who were promised one thing and given another by Dan. He didn’t get to pick his players, he was in a constant power struggle with the front office, and ultimately, as it always does in DC, everything came crumbling down this season.

“A casualty of the system”, well said Barstool Nate, well said. So what is to make us believe all of a sudden a tiny, 5 foot 5, egomaniacal, sociopathic tiger can now change his stripes? I love bringing in Riverboat Ron. I love that he has now brought in Jack Del Rio. I love Haskins, I love McLaurin, I love Guice, I love a bunch of the guys on defense, etc etc. But that’s never been the issue. The issue is Lil Dan Dan, and always has been. It’s a cultural problem, and the culture is not damn good. It’s an organizational problem that starts at the top and has trickled down to every spot along the way. We’re supposed to believe all of a sudden Snyder will stop handing out large contracts to guys like Albert Haynesworth and Josh Norman? We’re supposed to believe he’ll stop interjecting in the draft room and demanding picks get made? Just all of a sudden he’s completely removing himself? I will believe it when I see it, because I’ve been fed this story a handful of times now, and not once has it been true.

Dan Snyder lives in a bubble where he surrounds himself with yes-men. And he’s loyal to them, I’ll give him that. If you cup his balls and thank him for the privilege to do so, he’ll pay you every 2 weeks. Not a bad pay day if you can get it. But it is not a good tactic for winning football games. So while yes, I’m optimistic about the changes being made in Ashburn, I think we all need to realize the head is still on the snake. The devil is still on his throne. And we know what he’s capable of. We’ve seen this movie before. It gets replayed every single year and we sit on the edge of our seat expecting the nuclear bomb not to fall, and by god, it falls every time. Is this the time we get a new ending to the worst movie in time? We’ll see…but I’m not holding my breath quite yet.
