Peaky Blinders Season 5 Is So "Disgustingly Violent" The Show's Own Actors Are Having Trouble Watching It
Season 5 cannot come soon enough. This is the worst time of year for sports and TV in general unless you’re into The Bachelor or some shit, but once they drop the USA S5 premier date, we’re full steam ahead into the best time of year. And Peaky Blinders is a huge huge huge reason why. That and football is back blah blah fucking blah.
Anyways season 5 announced its UK release date today. Now we’re just waiting on the obviously more important release date for America. Idk why it wouldn’t be the same day but whatever, we get what we get.
To properly cook up the mood, I’m gonna need you all to light a heater in honor of the great Tommy Shelby:

Are your lungs sufficiently burning yet? Okay good. Mine are too. Nicotine is the shit and that is a stone cold fact. But take a look at this quote from Helen McCrory, who plays Aunt Polly in the show, via BBC:
‘I’ve only seen episode one, and there’s a whole bit… We saw the screening in Birmingham, for fans who managed to get lottery tickets. I look away from the screen. I, as Helen, can’t watch it. I think it’s disgusting, gratuitous violence. It is… no, not gratuitous – disgustingly violent.’
That, my friends, is a BOLD choice of words to describe an already disgustingly violent show. But I don’t want disgustingly violent, I NEED it with Peaky Blinders. That’s what makes it fucking great. That and the acting is superb. Pair superb acting and “disgustingly violent” with fantastic storyline and we have ourselves A+ television.
Oh, and here are a few other things to look out for this season:
- it’s based after the 1929 stock market crash
– the Shelby gang’s rival is now radicalized British fascists
– the show will run through the start of WWII, and don’t forget, Tommy is a WWI war hero
Yes please! So take it from me – you have two weeks to get caught up on the series. From here on out, I will have this very disclaimer in any Peaky Blinders blog because the people need to know how good of a TV show it is. WILDLY underrated, at least here in the States. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it could very well end up being on the pantheon of great TV shows with The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wire, etc. It still has work to do to get to those heights, but it’s on the right trajectory right now.
