It Looks Like UFC 222 Has Been Saved Thanks To Frankie Edgar vs Brian Ortega And Another Cyborg Showcase
MMAFighting- After days of negotiations, the UFC has scheduled Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs. Yana Kunitskaya for the women’s featherweight title on March 3 in Las Vegas, MMA Fighting has learned. The fight will replace the card’s original headliner, Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar for the men’s featherweight title, which was canceled last week after Holloway suffered an ankle injury in training.
As for Edgar, he will now face Brian Ortega in a non-title fight in the co-main event, sources say. The winner is expected to be next in line for a title shot.
Not bad! After Max Holloway vs Frankie Edgar for the UFC Featherweight Championship was once again cancelled due to injury, the odds of UFC 222 staying a pay per view looked grim. The company attempted to rush a TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt rematch, which TJ declined as he’s still nursing an injury and still has his eyes set on Flyweight Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, and wanted Brian “T-City” Ortega as a replacement for Max Holloway for a non-title co-main event – which they’ve now got. On top of that, a UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship match will main event the show when Cris Cyborg defends her title against…uhhh…Yana Kunitskaya! Y’know! Yana Kunitskaya! Duhhhh, the rightful contender for that UFC Featherweight Chamionship, the bantamweight from Invicta, everyone knows that. Of course.
Anyway, Frankie Edgar vs Brian Ortega is an AWESOME fight where I truly don’t know who will win (can never count T-City out), and kudos to Frankie for risking his title shot for the sake of this card. That’s why he’s The Answer, and why there’s only one Answer.
