A Bunch of Massholes Counter-Protest by Burning Patriots Jerseys, Minus the 'Burning Patriots Jerseys' Part

.

This has been all over the news in Massachusetts for the last 24 hours and went national last night. Some guy from Swansea invited the world over to his house to express outrage at the Patriots players who knelt for the Anthem Sunday through the magic healing power of burning the players jerseys. Then proceeded to slap on a Barstool shirt, grab a mic and produce … this. Maybe 20 people, sending a powerful message of national pride by throwing cheap, knockoff merchandise like the kind you get at the Dollar Tree for five bucks.

Seriously, was that an AFC Championship t-shirt I saw getting tossed into the flames? That’s your statement? That’s your sacrifice. This is New fucking England. The Pats have been to six straight conference title games. We don’t collect those shirts. Those are bought by grandmothers who don’t follow sports because they think the kids will like them and they end up as yard work shirts and dust rags. Lamar Hunt Trophies are used in the offices at Gillette to keep doors open. So don’t tell me you’re delivering a powerful message to the world by burning worthless merch. Unless you want that message to be “I’m a cheap piece of shit who’s not really committed to the cause.”

If you really want us to respect your opinion, you go all in. Let’s see you toss one of those $250 authentic jerseys or that signed Devin McCourty game-worn you won in the fundraiser silent auction. Then we’ll appreciate how down with the cause you are. Those poor hapless boobs from Cleveland who found themselves in an abusive relationship with Lebron weren’t torching Walmart tees. They burned the real things. Because their outrage was real. Their feelings were genuine. This thing in Swansea was just a pure “Everybody look at me” sham.

And if these guys plan on actually not following the Patriots any more over this – which I don’t think for a hot second they are – fine. More room on the bandwagon for the rest of us. But by all means, keep buying that Barstool merchandise. The Patriots gear I’ll still be buying won’t pay for itself.
