Be Your Own Sport - The Big 10 Is Reportedly Exploring A Schedule Based On Previous Standings Because 'That's How The NFL Does It'
I don't want to hear 'that's how the NFL/NBA does it' ever again as a reasoning for changing something in college sports. You know what fans want? Normalcy, at least to a degree. There's nothing that makes sense with conferences anymore. We have Cal in the ATLANTIC Coast Conference. We have UCLA vs Rutgers as a Big 10 game. People are fighting left and right about conference realignment and going to an 8 or 9 game conference schedule.
I've said it before, but just be your own sport. You know what would be better? Stop playing all big time non conference games off campus. Let fans and students experience that. It's better for the sport when things are happening on campus. Don't use the NFL as a guide, unless we're going to start having multi-year contracts, closed free agency and everything else that comes along with it.
Actually, I have the perfect scheduling idea. You go back to the old conferences, then play the teams you have geographic rivalries with and then you play a conference championship game. See how easy that is? I know we'll never have that again. I know we can't just have conferences that make sense ever again. So instead we're looking at playing a schedule from the standings the year prior? There's too much player movement for that to make sense. The only time we should do that is when the SEC plays the Big 10 in a week where every team plays each other. 1st place from the SEC the year before plays the Big 10 winner. All the way down the road. Do it week 5 or 6 and give fans at least something there. Oh and those games are all on campus.
Not to mention if you're going to do it 'because the NFL does it', you know what that league doesn't have? Buy games. That means no more bringing in FCS schools. No more paying schools to come to your place and lose by 40. You gotta play teams all on the same level as you, because, well, that's how the NFL does it.
Just be your own sport. Do dumb things because that's how college football does it. That's all fans want. We already have the NFL. We don't want another NFL.
