Virginia Football Literally Duct Taped a Camera to Their Goalpost to Show The World There IS a Better Way to Review Field Goals
Virginia. Bravo. Great job. I award them all of the hypothetical flowers I can afford. I have to think there's a better way to do this than what Virginia seemingly threw together on a whim last night. There must be way that looks a little less ridiculous. A way that doesn't involve duct tape. But I love where their heads are at.
The best part is, as fate would have it, we had a doink last night.
I must admit, I didn't turn on the game until the very end, so I'm not sure whether the broadcast mentioned anything about this. But I assume that camera could not have been used for an actual review. Like, if we had a Virginia Tech-Pitt situation, the refs wouldn't have been able to go to that camera... right?
Still… BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD. Isn't it kind of ridiculous how we don't have a better way to review field goals? I'm not sure how necessary it truly is. Any time there's a controversial field goal where the ball goes over the upright, when the right angle eventually surfaces (usually from a fan who happens to be filming from the perfect position), we come to find that the ref was right the whole time.

I mean, the referee is standing in the perfect spot for it. It should be next to impossible to fuck that one up. But with all the crazy video review technology we use in sports nowadays, it seems like we would have a more surefire way to know with 100% certainty if field goals are good/no good in real time.
Again, I gotta think there's a better way to do it than literally duct taping a camera to the goalpost, but it's a good start. Virginia showed us last night that it's possible. In fact, it's quite easy. Not that we didn't all know it already, but someone has to be the first to do it for real. Maybe one of these days football will actually start using a goalpost cam, or some sort of VAR technology, or… idk… fucking lasers or something.
