I Don't Ever Wanna Feel Like I Did That Day...

At its best, talk therapy is like a subtle emotional shake-down. Sometimes it takes a while, but eventually the important stuff buried in darkness comes to light. When it does, everything starts to make sense, and only then can healing begin.

In my case, it took 17 months for that to happen. The important stuff didn’t suddenly emerge out of nowhere; it was there all along. My subconscious denied me access to it to protect me. But once I understood that, in addition to protecting me, it was preventing me from healing, I granted myself access and came clean, first with myself, and then with my therapist.

I decided to confront these dilemmas, cut ‘em loose, and as painful as it was, I feel better for doing it. I’m finally on the path to healing.

My new/old therapist understands how difficult it is to confront these hidden dilemmas once they emerge, and she has allowed me all the time I need to process everything.  And that has made a big difference.

I remember this old joke:

Q: How many therapists does it take to unscrew a light bulb?

A: One, but the light bulb has to want to come out.

We hold all the answers to our own problems. We just have to be emotionally ready to confront them before letting them loose, and the job of a good therapist is to help us get through the process undamaged…

It's hard to believe that there's nobody out there

It's hard to believe that I'm all alone

I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day

Take me to the place I love, take me all the way…
