Episode 1 Of "Lanterns" Was A Hell Of A Ride That Was A Much Needed Win For The DCU And Fit Seamlessly Into HBO's Legendary Sunday 9 PM ET Time Slot (Spoiler-Free Review)
Phillip Faraone. Getty Images.Well that was fucking awesome. If you heard someone yelling "VICTORY!!!" like Johnny Drama around 10 PM ET last night, it was probably James Gunn celebrating DC's first dub in a minute while proving he still has some bullets in him and that all those glowing Rotten Tomatoes scores weren't bullshit.
Robbie Fox and I have been saying that a Damon Lindleof show starring Aaron Pierre (who I loved in Rebel Ridge), Kelly Macdonald (who I loved in No Country For Old Men), and Kyle Chandler (who everyone loves in everything he's in) had a chance to be elite television. Well after one episode, I'd say we are 1 for 1 with that 1 being a 500 foot home run. There is still plenty of time left, but The Penguin proved that you can have an elite show worthy of airing in the legendary HBO Sunday 9 PM ET time slot that can be enjoyed by millions of people regardless of how much or little they know about comic books. I see no reason why Lanterns can't pull off the same type of success based on the cast and crew alone without even mentioning the outstanding pilot episode that gave us hints of other great TV seasons of True Detective, Yellowstone, and Watchmen.
I won't get into spoilers since social media plastered a bunch all over my feed mere hours after the show premiered, which seems rude as hell. If you want to dive into the specifics, check out out today's My Mom's Basement where Robbie and I nerded out about this episode and the potential of the show as a whole.
