Notre Dame Has Settled On Their QB1 And The uNDefeated Blog Will Practically Write Itself

Notre Dame has grown and developed exponentially since Brian Kelly took over in 2010. They've gone undefeated in the regular season three times. They have been to the playoffs multiple times. They put guys in the NFL at every position. They've gone from irrelevant to a perennial top 10 program and the haters are furious. I can just picture the comment section getting ready to angrily type that tHeY dONt PlAy aNyOne aNd tHeY DonT bElOnG In tHE pLayOFfS. Doesn't matter that the data NEVER backs up the schedule thing and people get on ND for not being in a conference and playing Navy every year while Alabama plays Utah State, Louisiana-Monroe, and Austin-Peay this year in addition to Vanderbilt. 

Having said that...there is still a gap between Notre Dame and Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Georgia over the last several years. Perhaps the biggest gap between Notre Dame and those schools has been at the most important position. Notre Dame hasn't had a true difference-maker at QB since probably Brady Quinn. I loved Ian Book and he was a very good college QB, but he isn't on the same level with Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Bryce Young, Mac Jones, etc.

For the first time, from a pure ability standpoint...ND might have their guy. Remember the 2012 Notre Dame season? It was mostly Everett Golson as QB1 who would be spelled at times by the 2011 starter and now OC, Tommy Rees. I spent that entire year wishing that Notre Dame could use their biology department to put Tommy Rees's head and heart in Golson's body. Golson had all the talent, Rees had all the brains and if they came in one package it'd be incredible. Now...they kinda do with Buchner. We've seen the wheels. We've seen flashes of the arm. Rees speaks of his head

“I think he worked extremely hard this offseason. I think he’s worked extremely hard in camp. The mental capacity that he possesses is extremely high. I think as we continue down this road, there’s gonna be more and more growth for him.”

If Notre Dame finally has a quarterback that can genuinely make a similar amount of plays as his counterpart at Ohio State then the Irish will have a chance to pick off one of the big boys. Couldn't be more excited. Buchner just needs to stay healthy and get some weapons on the outside accomodated. Or throw it to Mayer every time. That's fine too.
