CoD Champs Day 1 Recap - Dallas Empire Looked Dominant, NYSL Won A Huge Game 5, While OpTic And Minnesota Advance Through The Loser's Bracket

This guy right here is the biggest character in the Competitive Call of Duty League. Ian "Crimsix" Porter is one of the best to ever pick up the sticks and he has fun doing it.

Earlier this year, he decided to go at Formal on Twitter right before Major IV.

He's the leader of Dallas Empire and after Day 1 of CoD Champs, they looked dominant as they swept Minnesota Røkkr (yes, the same team that won Major V in the most insane reverse sweep ever).

Day 1 Recap

The calm before the storm.

The matches started with Dallas Empire vs Minnesota Røkkr and then OpTic Gaming vs New York Subliners.

Dallas Empire 3-0'd Minnesota with ease.

Clayster, in his return back to competitive CoD after missing Major V, came back with a vengeance. 

Passion = unmatched.

Quick backstory on Clayster - he's been competing FOREVER and is a competitive Call of Duty icon to say the least. He was part of the winning 2020 Dallas Empire team that was featured in Verdansk.

This was when Modern Warfare (2019) was being played competitively. In a bizarre twist, the CDL had their inaugural year (previously was the CWL) and decided to make the team rosters 5v5. For the majority of CoD history, it was always 4v4. This added 12 new roster spots than ever before. Dallas Empire goes on to win the CoD Champs for the 2020 season. After the MW season ended (and I mean literally right after), the CDL announced they would be returning to 4v4 play. Therefore, they eliminated 12 professional Call of Duty roster spots.

Days after winning 2020 CoD Champs, Clayster got the call that he was dropped from Dallas Empire.  Imagine that? It would literally be like Tom Brady getting a call three days after the Super Bowl that he was cut from the team. Mind-boggling.

I can't imagine putting in a full year of work, accomplishing the biggest goal of the season and end up being dropped when you should be celebrating with your teammates/family.

The reason I bring this up, let Clayster talk that shit. He's earned it.

Alright back to the matchup - OpTic went down immediately 0-2 but then fought back to tie the series and force a game 5.

Ultimately, NYSL clutched up when they needed to and sent OpTic to the loser's bracket.

Now, the loser of the first match (Minnesota Røkkr) faces off against LA Thieves in the loser bracker. Loser goes home, while the winner can fight on.

In a wild 5 game series, Minnesota were able to survive and advance.

Last match of the night and we have OpTic facing off against Florida Mutineers. Same stakes are on the line - loser goes home.

Florida was able to secure map one.

But it was the only map they were able steal from OpTic as they advance to Saturday's play.

As Scump said in his postgame interview, OpTic needs to tighten up in Search and Destroy to have any chance to make it to Championship Sunday. The blueprint is there, let's see if the boys can execute.

Day 2 Schedule

Matches resume at 3pm EST with Ultra vs Empire. Two very strong teams facing off with the loser facing OpTic to see who stays and who continues to Saturday. For the other matchups, we have Atlanta FaZe vs New York Subliners with the loser facing off against the Minnesota Røkkr. The winner of Ultra/Empire and FaZe/Subliners will face each other on Saturday for their chance to solidify their Championship Sunday ticket.
