[Deadline] - The Kings of Queens stars Kevin James, Leah Rimini, Victor Williams and Patton Oswalt are reuniting virtually for a charity table read.
Hosted by Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind The King of Queens, the special charity event will honor series star Jerry Stiller, who died of natural causes in May 2020, and raise money and awareness for New York city health care and arts organization Henry Street Settlement.
In addition to the table read, the special event will feature a tribute to Jerry Stiller. After, the cast will join Weithorn for a Q&A. The table read, tribute and Q&A will be posted on The King of Queens Facebook page on Friday, March 12 at 11 a.m. PT. Fans can support Henry Street Settlement here.
If you somehow haven't read or heard me talk excessively about one of my favorite shows, you know I love The King of Queens. Completely underrated sitcom from the 90s-2000s. I'm a sucker for it and love that we get reruns throughout the day still. Hell, I even had to go to blog war for the show when Chief made one of the dumbest statements of all time:
Well great news. The cast is getting back together do a table read for charity. Not just any charity, the one of Jerry Stiller aka Arthur Spooner. Yes, Frank Costanza is his best role but the man was a genius when it came to playing dads on TV. Arthur Spooner is one of the most underrated characters in TV history.
His schemes are dumb but always make me laugh. The interaction between him and Doug is what makes the show so great. The fact they just go back and forth at each other, he’s always instigating. The fact he goes on walks with a dog walker.
He was so outrageous that he basically was Frank just in Queens. There was no one better at doing the regular conversation directly into screaming than Jerry Stiller. It's why he made Frank Costanza great and why he made Arthur Spooner great. But the show worked perfectly and he was a large part of it. That's why I can't wait for this table read.
I don’t care that Kevin James made just some terrible movies afterward, he’s not Kevin James. He’s Doug Heffernan and Doug Heffernan is a great character. Carrie is a smoke, especially in the early episodes. Throw in Deacon as an A+ best friend and you got a decent show. Hell, Clem who is everyone's best friend may have summed it up perfectly once:
And yeah that's right, Carrie was a smoke in the show. I don't care how much she yelled at Doug. Certified smoke.
So shout out the cast for getting together. It won't feel right without Arthur there, but it's at least in his memory. I'll be honest, when I saw the teaser I was worried about a reboot since every show is getting one. It can't be done unless Arthur is in it. The fact it's just a table read is something I can get behind. Again, I'm not saying he's better than Frank Costanze, I'm just saying it's time to give Arthur Spooner the respect he deserves. One of the greatest TV dads and characters out there.
